Have travelled the route during my last visit . Straight from Munsiyari to PB and then back to KMVN Chaukhori from PB.
As Dilliwala points , its the same road Chaukhori , Udiyari Bend, Berinag , Rai Agar and onward to Gangolihat. But before Gangolihat near a place called Guptari it coasts down to PB. If I recall correctly from Chaukhori to PB , it would be between 20-30 Kms. The road is metalled throughout and good. The infrastructure in that region in terms of road is surprisingly good. From Rai agar to PB there are some fantastic views from the roadside. PB is an experience by itself , particularly the bit about slithering down the cave.

Thanks WayFarer..Checked the map sent by Dilliwala,it also shows the the route is from RaiAgar.Earlier I thought there were two routes one from Rai Agar and another from Berinag. The bifurcation at Berinag leads to Koteshwar Cave.Is there any hotels at Patal Bhuvneshwar, or one has to stay at Guptari or Rai Agar.Seems the closest KMVN TRC is at Chaukori.

Guess what ; there is a KMVN TRH just outside the temple entrance at Patal Bhubaneswar. There are other hotels out there too , have not really looked , but you cannot miss the KMVN since its on the entrance.

Thanks for the info on KMVN at PB, Wayfarer. Didn't know about it. Reasonably priced too.

Looking at the map, I've wondered why there's no road coming from Pithoragarh, seems it wud be quite easy to connect Chandak to Birgoli what with river terrain in between. Wud just require a bridge thrown across the Ramganga.
Any sign of road-building activity at PB?

I also travelled on this road(Nathuakhan to Bhowali) last year but never noticed any bifurcation at Nathuakhan...

Take a look at your N&W map. Like I said there's a 'break' in the road, but the map detail is old, so maybe the road goes thru now.
The bifurcation is certainly there. I think there are some shops at the turn, don't remember exactly.
Yes Dilliwala and Piyush, we took a halt for our lunch at the junction. Gahat ki Dal with roti of Nathuakhan was very tasty indeed. The bifurcation looked to be metalled at Nathuakhan end. Asked local persons about the road but could not follow. I think it may join Kakrighat what Dilliwala says. We observed one bifurcation at kakrighat which looked to be under construction and un metalled at that end. Thank you all for a nice discussion.

This will cover sight seeings & going from one hill station to another. There are Non A/c Maruti Van available foir hire. When I went in Feb 05 it was @ Rs. 1000 per day (expect some appreciation) including driver charges as the owner himself was the driver.

Good that you are dropping Mussorie from your plan as it would have been too much of travelling.

I would suggest you spend time in Delhi after arriving & catch the night train. If you decide to catch a bus then most of the day will be spent in travelling & you will reach Nainital late evening & will have to spend on hotel accomodation for that night.

Any recommendations on driver/guide for the Kumaon region?

From Kausani you can visit Gwaldam via Baijnath and again come back to Kausani. Total journey will be around 80 Km.
From Ramgarh you can do a round trip Ramgarh-Bhatala-Mukteshwar-Shitla-Odakhan-Nathuakhan-Tallaramgarh-Ramgarh. Total journey will be around 50 Km.
During summer probability of seeing the himalayan peaks is less still you can hope for the best.

Leaving Rishikesh for Kumanon tomorrow

Hi All,

We have been having a real blast, made a nest at GMVN Hotel Bharat Bhomi, at Rishikesh (who has an excellent manager and very clean hotel. 400 rps for deluxe room we could not ask for any better room or nicer people, they even have beautifully managed garden outside.) Anyway we have been coming and going, mainly local but also made it within 6 km of Gangotri, snow on the road and another snow drift beyond or we would have started digging, magnificent trip, have pics and many, many wonderful memories. Only saw 12 cars pass us by in one whole day. Plan to return and walk up from UttarKashi to Gangotri taking many days and staying at GMVN along the way. Already planning to return in Dec this year with my son. This place and the sheer solitude is right up my alley.

We have, by sheer grace/luck (after being burned badly a couple of times) found a driver and brand new car, that he owns, to take us to Kumanon. 800 rps per day all inclusive. Originally quoted 900 and when we said 7-12 days trip he dropped to 800, we did not even have to bargain. I could provide the contact info if anyone needs it. They are very nice folk, already tried to take us to home for breakfast but we had already eaten, family business, just getting started, he approached on the street on Holi, and since we didn't really go out it was a blessing of God that he found us.

Many thanks to all of you, Dillwalla, Piyush, Capt, Shymal, and all others I cannot remember off the top of head right now for making this a wonderful trip. We could not have done it without you and have enjoyed our Indian Adventure to the fullest.

We have GMVN brouchures starting at Landowne and then on to Naintal by way for Corbett Park, Almora, Binsar, Mukteswar, and on to many many of the towns and sites that you all have talked about so much since I joined Indiamike last year. (You all need to start something similar for Mexico to would fly!). Anyway. we have to go, sorry I have not communicated more or sooner.

Love and best wishes to all

Randi and Beth

PS Only one thing would help us.....our hotel on Delhi was good but a little high, of course we understand that Delhi would be higher, but they took advange a little we feel, we are in Hotel Prince Polonia, of anyone has an idea of a hotel, with elevator, and ac rooms that is less that 1500 rps a night please advise. Dilliwala? Your help? PLease. Randi
