Munsiary --- I doubt whether the spelling is correct or not. But I know that the place is very near to Tibet (China) at the north. You know the word ‘Mun’—signifies ‘Snowflakes’ in Tibetan language and Siary or Piary signifies ‘Land’. Overall Munsiary means ‘ Land of snow flakes’. Piyush, I came to know about Khalia top first time from ‘Almora boy’—an IM member, trekker and an explorer of Himalay. Let us know how far Khalia Top is from Munsiary. Is there a place called Madkot near Munsiary, famous for hot spring?
Thanks Ronak for the contribution.

Khalia top is about 8 km or so from Munsiyari.

Madkot is closeby.. can't remember how far, but I did Madkot/Jouljibi and back well within a days drive. Madkot itself was maybe an hours drive or so from Munsiyari, and yes, famous for hot water springs.

Ronak.
My guide told me the tariff at Zara Resort is close to 1200Rs per day..May be it goes down in non peak season(Jan 15 to March 15).
Yes its a place of snow, thats why Munsyari is also called Himnagari..You can see a board, just when you enter Munsyari town saying himnagari Munsyari me aapka swagat hai...
The Delhi Munsyari bus is also known as Himnagari Express..
Capt is right Khaliya Top is nearlly 7-8km from Munsyari..Somebody told me that the Govt is planning to prepare a ropeway from Khaliyatop to Munsyari..Good idea..

Any idea about morning hours bus (around 0700 hrs) from Delhi to Kathgodam/Haldwani? From where they start and takes how much time?

Shyamal, if u interchange the i and the y, u'll have it right.
Mun-syari.

I also took a look at Zara in July and didn't like it. For the state many of the rooms were in (damp, paint peeling), it's greatly overpriced. Their cheapest room was for Rs. 900, after discount Rs. 600. It does have the best restaurant that is easily accessible, though. With a large view window looking onto Panchchuli.

U can get a much better room at KMVN for Rs. 600.
Generally the MVNs are supposed to provide heaters on request for a charge, but it cud well be poss that they have none at Munsyari.
Wayfarer is 100-200 m up a narrow path from the road. Didn't check it out.

Madkot is 23 km from Munsyari. No buses going that way, only jeeps or cars.

Where the hell are the hot-springs at Madkot? How come I missed them?

There was no "them", just one large trickle and a very small not too clean looking pool.. a little outside Madkot.

They told me a dip will relieve all kinds of illness, so I dipped my finger in the water.

PS: An even more belated Happy Birthday, ronak.

Oh, THAT one? (Just before the bridge when coming from Munsyari, right?)
I actually thought of that one when writing the above post and was going to ask "Is that it?", but then figured it cudn't possibly be!

So now u have a non-Achilles finger, right?

Just a few questions for the experts. I am booked for a skiing course starting 7th Jan at GMVNL. What is the best way to get to Auli from Delhi keeping in mind the road and weather conditions?

One option would be to take the Shatabdi to Dehradun and then catch a bus to Joshimath-Auli. Or do they have buses that run from Delhi to Joshimath? Are overnight bus journeys recommended in the hills? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

1. Wrong station. U shud get off at Haridwar.
Yes, a combination of train and bus/jeep will be the most comfortable. In any case u'll be better off taking the night-train no. 4041 Mussoorie Express from Delhi. It gets in early at Haridwar, giving u the whole day to get to Joshimath. U will need it - it's a long, hard drive. If u arrive at 11.30 am on the Shatabdi, u will lose 6 hours and not make it to Joshimath same day, or not till very very late. Not worth it.

Do read up the other threads on Badrinath, Valley of Flowers/VOF, and Auli/skiing. There is a LOT of info on how to get to Joshimath. Run a search with the above names in the 'UP/Uttarakhand' forum and the 'Trekking' forum. After that feel free to ask again if u still have Q's.
Briefly, u can get transport from Haridwar to Joshimath, and even more from Rishikesh. A share-jeep will get u there fastest.

2. Once a day, but I don't recommend it. Will be a tiring long haul.

3. No

Yes, and yes.

The only place worth visiting in that general area is Patal Bhubneshwar, IMHO.

Besides the excellent views etc etc, for which you don't have to go anywhere once you are there.

That spring was pathetic. A few locals were taking a bath there, I cud never have guessed the water was hot, didn't look anything like it.

Is it true that one can get to PB only from Raiagar or Gangolihat? Seems strange that there's no road from Pithoragarh, which looks a short distance away across the Ramganga, unless the terrain forbids it.

They are, about 110 km apart. Captain was being a General - I mean he was being general, generously.
