Thinking of visiting Rishikesh on our month trip in India in August, can anyone advise some good things to do there? Is it advisable to book a guest house before we arrive?

also would it be worth visiting the Corbett Tiger Reserve in August and if so is it easy to get there from Rishikesh?

Well, from rishikesh the better option would be visit of Rajaji NP which is much closer than Corbett and similarly spectacular for one day visit. (Corbett of course offers the unique possibility to spend several whole days in Dhikala if you have enough time).
What will be the main problem for you is the fact that both these parks are officialy closed in August (for public accessible only November - April).
There is allegedly the possibility to organize the visit via GMVN tourist office in Haridwar (tel. 2244240, Railway Rd.) even when the park is closed but I donīt have personal experience - check it.

cimicak, thanks for the advice. Looks like most NP are closed during the monsoon season, which is a shame as thats when we will be in India and I would love to pay one a visit. If anyone has any suggestions on a NP that is open and worth visiting I'd appreciate it...

Here's a nice place to stay with a great travellers style restaurant & great views down to the Ganga & Ramjula. It's a 15 min pleasant walk down to Lakshmanjhula & Ramjhula. They charge 2-600Rs depending on which floor, the higher floors are dearer for the spectacular views of Ganga. I stayed there in early Jan & will be returning in mid Aug.

There's lot's of things to do in Rishi, but you need to be more specific about what interests you??? KK

Hi shep!!!
No nat park is open in Monsoon. They keep it closed as Monsoon is the mating season 4 all those wonderful fauna. That is one of the important reason.
U can give a thought to Valley of flowers which will bloom in monsoon. Discover Flora instead of fauna...
