Hey - lived in dehradun for a year. I stayed with a family so cannot help out with hotels, but I did stay a few nights at Hotel Madhuban which is lovely but high-range.

Places to eat in dehradun: Kumar Vegetarian, Hotel Madhuban. Garry's for fast food burgers. Kumar Sweets for...well, sweets

Walks through the Forest Research Institute (I believe on chakrata road) are not to be missed.

Otherwise: not a lot to do in Dehradun, honestly! There is a crowded bazaar, a buddhist temple, a really lovely cave temple for shiva. Lots of top Indian boarding schools. Worth a night or two, but you might get bored longer than that

There are waterfalls at Sahastradhara, near Dehradun. And of course there's that charming hill-station called Mussoorie, just 35 kms. away !

The waterfalls were underwhelming, but Mussoorie is one of my favorite places in the world and certainly worth a night or two You can get a share car from the dehradun train station.
