On last day I want to goback from Ranikhet to straight Kathgodam.
At Kathgodam my train will be at night 10 o'clock.

I want to know what will be time for latest bus from Ranikhet to

you are right, four days will not be sufficient.

cold.. it can get very cold and sometimes windy.
have seen iced roads and snowfall in kausani/almora area in december, with traffic hampered. better find a decent hotel with heating, with family around.

best time for himalayan views from kausani, though.

cant help with bus timings or costs, sorry. drove from delhi myself.

suggestion.. spend minimum time out of the four days in nainital, or better still, skip it altogether. almora, ranikhet and kausani are much better.

there isnt much difference between kausani, almora and ranikhet as far as the view, vegetation and overall ambience goes, nainital and the tal region would provide you variety.

I was contacting KMVN guest house. They are telling to go for
a advance booking. Super deluxe room Rs 840 ( with 30 % discount).
Should I do that ? I have to send the full amount in advance.
If I will not go for this, Can I get a room during December ?
The Manager from KMVN was telling that it is difficult to get a room during December, it there will be snowfall.

In Kausani and Almora it won't be a problem to get a room in the first week of December, as this is still considered low season. I was there in Almora and Kausani in December and found that sizable reductions were available and hotels were largely empty. I don't know the situation in Ranhiket but I supect Nainital will also be pretty empty at the beginning of December!!
Shared taxis were 80 rupees per person from Almora to Kathkodam I expect they will be around the same for Ranhiket-Kathkodam!!

A taxi cost us 800 from Pappersalli to Kathodem, 1000 in the other direction!!

Distances are similar, so the prices should be too!!

all the places above are crowded during school vacations and that is when accomodation becomes expensive as demand is more than supply.

1 st week of december is not vacation time in part of india so getting your choioce of accomodation at discounted prices should not be a problem.

hope this is of help

Hi Mani

I'm planning on doing Kausani, Almora, Nanital ... between 21 Dec to around 29 Dec 2006.

I was planning on NOT booking any hotels to keep things nice and flexible. I typically look for accomodations around 50 USD per night.

Is availability going to be a problem over this period ??

Hotels are traditionally busy at Christmas and New Year many organise dinner dances around this time and can often be full!!

Having said that I was in Kausani around the 22st of December if I remember rightly and there was no shortage of rooms at that time, Come to think of it there weren't any dinner dances organised either.
Almora didn't seem to get much busier at Christmas but I was away from town!! So it's hard to say.

Probably best to know where you are sleeping For two days at Christmas and New Year just to be on the safe side!!

Dear Mickey,

Yes availability will be a big problem for any kind of accommodation. The proximity of nainital and the hills to the large cities and New delhi region is one reason that people escape to these places during school holidays.

The usually $ 50 type will become anything from $ 75- 150 due to the rush.

My sugestion for Nainital book for your approximate days that you will stay and the decide after you get there. should you want to stay a day less most places would then sell that room for that day to anybody else and deduct a small amount and return the rest to you. should you want to stay more you can check if it is possible at the same hotel or look around and find something else.

and for the rest make a list of hotels that meet your requirement call a couple of days before you plan to go and ask if accomodation is possible, if yes then confirm the booking on telephone and ask them to hold the room for you give them your travel details so that they are more sure. If not possible then arrive at your destination early and check once again with your target hotels, look around at other hotels it may happen that you stay 2 days in one hotel and another 2 days in another or you have to go a little away from the center of town or have to stay in a budget place or skip the town.

We stayed at the following places in 1988/89
Nainital - Hotel elphinstone across the lake
almora- hotel shikhar
kausani - hotel tiger hill

hope this is of help

regards
Mani

Thanks all for your guidance. One more quick querry.

I want to see Almora in the way to Kausani from Nainital and
want to see Ranikhet during my return way from Kausani to
Nainital/Kathgodam. I will start early in the morning from
Nainital and supposed to reach Kausani by evening. So I have 5/6
hours for Almora.

I will start morning from Kausani and reach Kathgodam by evening.

So my problem in during sightseeing at Ranikhet/Almora is my
luggages. Is there any temporary place to keep the luggage for
sometime ?

Another thing,
How will the cost of car from Kausani to Kathgodam ?( If I will
hire and go for the sightseeing at Ranikhet means it will be with me for the whole day and drop me at Kathgodam station )

Please have a quick reply, as I am leaving on 12th afternoon.

Thanks,

Bhabani

The car should be in the 1200 range for the day. (Kausani to Kathgodam)

You could try and keep your luggage in the KMVN places. Not aware of any others. Or, if you hire a car, in the car itself.

Do try to stop for an hour at Bhimtal en route Kathgodam.
