Question Nainital-Almora-Kausani-Ranikhet: Requesting suggestions !!!

Hello everybody,
Am planning a 7-8 days (not more than 8 from delhi n back) trip to Nainital-Almora-Kausani-Ranikhet area along with 6 of my friends starting from 11th of June. Can you suggest some good plans for the duration.
We
- want a 3/4 days stretch easy to moderate trek in-between above places or a little outside to the area
- don't mind the accomodation (i mean low cost wd do)
- need atleast a day at Nainital city and we may not want to go to Bhimtal
- wd love to visit the observatory near nanital if it provides some intersting programs for tourists
- ...well thats all

Can you help us out ?

Do browse the Uttarakhand forum here- enormous information.

My suggestion for the circuit

Haldwani/Almora/Binsar/Kausani/Ranikhet/Nainital/Kathgodam

If you want to rush things a bit, add Chaukori/Munsiyari- and delete Kausani

Stay at kmvn everywhere.

easy trek/walk- Binsar/Jageshwar.

What is kmvn exactly ? And where do we start for the Binsar/jageshwar trek/walk ? How much time would it take ? Also I'd wd be thankful if you could provide a general overview as to how costly the local transportation is in the region ? I mean a comparison of state transport buses and pvt vehicals... ?

Is it possible to follow the route Almora-Kausani-Ranikhet in say arnd 2 days walk/trek .. can we get any guides there (for reasonable price) to show us the trek route ?

Thanks

err, from Binsar, or Jageshwar. Can be done in a day, or day and a half. Guides not required.

Buses will cost very very little.
Shared jeeps are available too, cheap.

Private taxis will cost much more- round it off to a thousand a day, or thereabouts. Depends where you aer going.

KMVN is Kumaon Madal Vikas Nigam.. It a tourist office of the region they provide the best accomodation with very resonable price and extra fresh food. that is you order and wait for the food to be cooked... they dont store anything ..
Visit : www.kmvn.org this is their website

They will make your trip quite cheap. I have always used them.

Hello Navin,
Welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place, there is loads and loads of information about uttarakahnd over here (it is called uttarakhand, not uttaranchal).
If you want to have a look at the pics of various places, have a look at my photo blog here: http://almoraboy.blogspot.com/2006/0...himalayas.html
I have put in travel reports from different parts of UK (uttarakhand) over here. some other good threads are "Escape to Kumaon" and "Travel to uttaranchal".

Err, I still hv some Qs !

I am wondering if anything amongst below is possible ... :
1. Stay at Nainital (day1 +day2). Leave for Joshimath (I suppose this is arnd 290 km and takes approx 11 hrs ? ) Is this journey possible overnight ? Next ffrom Joshimath if we wish to go to Auli for skiing...!!! Is this possible ? Does Auli have snow in june ??

2.Nainital (day1-day2). Go to Almora. Stay there. Leave for Pancheshwar (Rafting destination )!! @ saryu ? Is this option viable ? How much time wd this journey from Almora to Saryu take ? And can you suggest any facility which will allow 1st timers for rafting @ Saryu(Pancheshwar) ?

3. Any nearby Skiing/rafting destinations ? Snowpeak ?? How is it ? How much time wd an avrage trekker need for Nainital-Snowpeak-Bhowali ? And how long wd it take for this route by vehical ? Is skiing possible in Snowpeak in June ?

You've never been in the hills in summer, have you?
Skiing in JUNE??!! Forget it!

1. DON"T DRIVE AT NIGHT!!
Other than that, you can go to Auli just to laze about. Or do a short trek to Gorson. You might catch views specially early morn, and at Auli/Gorson they are stupendous!

2. It's approx 165 km from Almora to Pancheshwar via Lohaghat. Doable in approx 5 hours. No idea about rafting facilities though.

3. Where's Snowpeak? Do you mean Snowview in Nainital, or Cheena Peak above the town?

Hello,

As DW said, it seems you are not too familiar with pahaad. Ok, here is the grub ->

Q1). DO NOT drive in the night. get up early and leave for Joshimath. People can drive in the nights, but why risk it unnecessarily.

Q3). Skiing is done ONLY in winters. At this time of the year, you can see the snow covered peaks and take their pics. If you are a good mountaineer or a good trekker, then you can touch the snow levels which can be found from approx 5000 metres onwards. For skiing, make another trip in the winters.

There is no place called snowpeak in Nainital. It is called Snowview and it is on the top of the ridge that is on nainital's north eastern side. You can go there by a cable car - or walk (but that would be a good exercise if you are not used to climbing up).

For bhowali, there is a direct road from Nainital - no trek routes to bhowali as far as I remember. I think you can do Bhowali-Nainital easily in under 30 mins (by vehicle).

So who might have some idea about rafting in Pancheshwar ?

Captain,

There are a few caveats on Binsar Jageshwar trek. We did want to do this, but got discouraged. First, KMVN Binsar requires you to get a guide. [It is possible my wife's nationality had something to do with it, but we were in good enough shape and had done such distances.] Of course, you could wander off on your own, but the pathways aren't exactly clear. You can avoid this issue by starting at Jageshwar. However, we did hike up to Vriddha Jageshwar and quite far beyond from Jageshwar, but again there were no clear signs or anything. But one could ask around (we didn't as we were going nowhere in particular ).

The second and perhaps a more critical point is that to do the return trek in a day might not be for everyone. It is 13/15 km each way to Vriddha Jageshwar/Jageshwar, without the margin for losing the way. We were willing, but the guide wasn't...

That said, there is plenty of good treking around Binsar.
