God forbid, indeed. Just in case you need more encouragement, here is a link for some more (phar changla - very nice) pictures from the Lucknow district. Notice the Charbaugh railway station and the King George Medical College. http://lucknow.nic.in/PictureGa.htm Lucknow and Hyderabd are very interesting cities as they have a large Islamic (Muslim). This fusion is very interesting both in the cuisine, the language, and, of course, the architecture. |

Sounds like I'll definitely be declaring a vacation from my vegetarianism in Lucknow.... *drool*
(Just FYI, I've decided I'm free to take a break from being veg anytime meat seems particularly meaningful or important; Thanksgiving turkey, my mom's gumbo with homemade andouille, lamb shank at a Passover seder, pulled pork sandwiches at a roadside stand in rural Tennessee, etc) |

You might want to visit the Bara Imambara, La Martiniere, and the Residency. Lucknow turned out to be one of the highlights of our 2001 trip - I'd like to go there again some day.

The Lucknow Residency was, I think, where the British were based in the area. So sort of like a fort or base of some kind? (spotty on my Raj-era British military terms, sorry) |

La Martiniere is a school founded in the 1800s.
The Residecy was the site of a siege during the rebellion in 1857 - a very haunting place. |

So long as you eat in busy restaurants, where the food is not sitting around, you should be fine. I am not a vegetarian, even in India, and only got sick from meat one time there -- at a Western-style restaurant in Bangalore. |

Oh, I didn't being "being veg in India to avoid getting sick". I meant being a vegetarian, in my life. I've chosen not to eat meat because of the extreme stress the meat industry puts on the environment. However, since I feel no moral aversion to meat (any more than I do to cars, or plastic grocery bags, or any of the other things I abstain from for ecological reasons), I'm OK with eating a little bit, as I say "when it's important."

I think the Bool Bhuliya (sp?) was featured in a recent movie by the same name. The engineering of this structure was incredible; while standing deep inside a water-well like area, you could see through the carefully planned reflection in the pool who was standing outside the steps of the building, although the people outside could not see you, nor could you see them with the naked eye. The Imam Baara was likewise fascinating with strange acoustics to experiment with and formidable places to spy on enemies from. The view from the rooftop was incredible, too, with gorgeous views of a most intriguing looking mosque. I would plan a picnic here at sunset and stay a long while people watching in the park.
Lucknow has great street food, among other things, try the mini-samosas. Chikan work is originally from Lucknow and it is every where; you won't have any trouble finding it. Lucknow has a unique atmosphere and I can't wait to spend more time there. Chocolat if you go, do make sure to post more ideas for us all. |

Oh, do get a guide to visit these buildings - well worth the intriging stories. And bring a flashlight, and maybe some sort of socks for roaming around the dark, stone, secret passageways. Come to think of it, will they let you wear socks? (I've only been there when it was 110 degrees F. )There are a few spots that have the potential to be very creepy...don't go in without a group or someone you trust.
