Lansdowne in Feb?

Hi,

I and my friends are thinking to go for a weekend holiday to Lansdowne in Feb first week. I have already been there in august last year and it was heavenly. We do not have much idea about the weather in feb tho'. I mean it would be chilling we know...but we are not sure about snow and rain. Would it be safe to go there during this season. We are just looking for two days in tranquility and peace. Is there any other suggestion except Lansdowne? We have almost gone crazy by the maddening crowd and rush in Delhi . Please help

Thanks.

In the vicinity of Lansdowne is Kalagarh wild life sanctuary which is an excellent place for wild life like Elephants and birds I dont think it will be snowing or raining in Feb
the nearest rail head is Kotgarh or you can take a bus upto Haridwar and look out for state transport bus reaching lansdowne

U mixed those two up, as Sadanand hinted:- railhead - Kotdwara, bus to Lansdowne or Kalagarh - also from Kotdwara.

To the OP: U can go to Lansdowne in Feb. It will be as cold as any hill-station at night - bundle up. Days will be pleasant when the suns's out - wear light woollens.
U shud be mentally prepared for bad weather, even snow. Feb is "that time of year" in the hills.

U cud also try Mussoorie for a similar experience. Try to stay away from the bazar if u go.

I like to use the train...it leaves Delhi at around 10 Pm (Check train site for confirmed timings & details) and reaches Kotdwara at around 6 AM. From their a shared Jeep charges Rs.40 and takes less that 2 hours to reach Lansdowne. While coming back take a jeep from Lansdowne before 6Pm as after that they would be rare..the train leaves from Kotdwara at around 10Pm and reached Delhi around 6-7AM...you can get the 3AC tix as they would cost Rs.350 only for the overnight journey and you can sleep peacefully.

I was there last year around that time. The weather will be pleasant, not too cold.

One word of caution, book your accodamation well in advance. There are only 3 hotels (Fairydale, GMVNL and Mayur) and getting acco is very difficult.

Cheers

Can anyone update on the accommodation situation in Lansdowne? We too are thinking of heading there in Feb but is it really necessary to pre book? I mean we are too lazy.

I have mentioned earlier that there are only 5 hotels over there...two of them are out of town...one is a government owned accommodation and that leaves only two of them...

The most popular is Fairydale resort...which I would advice to prebook...they will give you their ICICI bank account number and you can transfer the advance to their account...

However I have been there couple of times, and both the times without any booking...and have been able to get the room in Fairydale pretty easily..

mridula, I arrived at Lansdowne on a cold, blustery, rainy (and how!) night im mid-Feb 3 years ago - GMVN didn't have the room we wanted available and Fairy Dale also gave us the last choice room (quite literally). Seven carloads had landed up, almost simultaneously!
Next 2 nights we had the run of the town - both places (the only decent accom then) empty, except for us.

With shashank's info of more hotels, I don't think u shud have a prob. At the most u cud call ahead on your day of departure, certainly don't bother with any advance payments (hard to get a refund if u don't like the place).

We were in Lansdowne last weekend. And as you guys had warned, it happened. There was a huge group from Delhi and GMVN and Fairydale were booked solid. We got a room in Mayur Hotel and though it is quite rundown, I have seen worse.

As a place Lansdowne still was very peaceful and we never met the huge group at any of our walks but if you ask me about scenic beauty, I have been to more spectacular places. But with the amount of time we had, Lansdowne was pretty good. If only I could see some snow covered peaks in the far distance ...

Oh what a pity! On both counts. The snow views are quite spectacular when it's clear. Even Kalanag is visible from Tiffin Top.

Shashank mentioned 2 new hotels in another thread (not Mayur).
Weren't they available?

Dilliwala, I had no clue that snow peaks are visible from Lansdowne, I mean on both the days there were no such peaks visible even from the Top. I was not aware of the two new hotels so didn't look for them, my bad. Though we did cross a hotel while entering the town but we just got lazy and decided to stay put at Mayur. But then a break is always nice and this one was sorely needed. I can now see I was low on research.
