How long a trek from Haridwar to Varanasi?

Namaste,

I will be taking Yatra to Kadarnath from Haridwar in a year or so, I was hoping to run down to Varanasi to visit the jyotrilinga there. I will be spening the bulk of my trip in the Haridwar Rishikesh area and will only be in india for 17days or so. I was wondering if it was feasible to visit Varanasi and how long a trip it will be?

Thank you kindly for your feedback.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Ofcourse it is feasible. With only 17 days, you're best best is to take an overnight train from Delhi. Or obviously you can fly in and out as well.

I'm sorry if I used the word "trek" it was poor wording on my part, "travel" would have been much better.

Delux bus from Hardwar to Delhi (a day) then the very nice overnight train from Delhi to Varanasi.

I thought you meant "walk" too

There's a direct daily train from Haridwar to Varanasi - The 3010 Doon Express - which takes 18 hours for the journey.

We've done the train journey in the other direction and it is a long old slog. I think it took 26 hours in the end. The rolling stock wasn't the finest either, the 2nd class sleeper (we were the sole occupants of the whole coach!) had definitely seen better days.

Please check the date of the thread before replying, it may save you some time.

Speaking of saving time,it's quicker to get a train from Roorkee to Varanasi, or from Haridwar, it's quicker to change trains at Moradabad for a connecting train to Varanasi.

The direct trains are painfully slow.

Hi Steven,

in that point i can`t really follow you.
For me, there is no faster connection than the 3010 Doon Expr.

Starting in Haridwar and changing train in Moradabad:
There is no good connection which saves much time. (The 3010 stops in MB and changing the train does not really make sense.)

The same if i start in Roorkee. There are only 3XXX trains to BSB which are not much faster than the 3010. And i have to make my way from Haridwar to Roorkee.

So which is your "total time" connection from HW to BSB which is faster than the 3010???

Thanks

There are faster trains (Himgiri for example), not all well timed, but there is a twice weekly train that is fast and well timed.

The Moradabad option is good for better timings and availability.

I wrote about them in another post.....

Haridwar to Varanasi.

Roorkee and Laksar Jn are about 32kms from Haridwar, Roorkee is a friendly place and a large town, there should be plenty of transport from Haridwar.

I've not been to Laksar, but I did notice that taxis charge Rs300 to go from Laxman Jula (the tourist part of Rishikesh) to Laksar (should be the same price to Roorkee), so a taxi from Haridwar should be just over half of that.

Train 8104 departs Roorkee (Wed & Fri only) at 18:55, then Laksar Jn at 19:18 and gets to Varanasi at 09:30 (2A, 3A, SL.)

Another option.....

Train 4114 departs Haridwar daily at 14.50 and gets to Moradabad at 18.05 (2A, SL.)

Train 4008 (Tu & Th) and train 4016 (F & Su) depart Moradabad at 20.15 and get to Varanasi at 09.10 (3A, SL.)
