yes, it is called bicchu booti ... the exact kumaoni word for it is "shishuna". it is also used as a vegetable dish in pahaad. it is called shishunaa kaa saag. really yummy.

Thanks for the discussion here, I am an informed man now .
So are we, nitin, so are we! That's why it's good to create confusion sometimes (or near-boredom - you shud see how long we went on about 4wd!), helps clear the mountain air (sorry, Capt - me bad).
Altho frankly, now I'm wishing Shyamal and your colleague HADN'T described the route - I CUD have gone that way last year to Almora, had I known, with probably a maximum of 10 km extra! Now no rest till I finally do! Ah well, that's the way it is with us Himalaya fans - want to have our milk-cake and eat it too.

And evidently in HP too, as per mridula, and there it's made from "bichhu-jari".
Or maybe jhari? Not sure which word is meant.
As I mentioned in that thread, I thought I'd heard of it being made somewhere in UA, maybe Garhwal, but cud be I'd heard about the Kumaoni one you describe, AB.

yes sir, it is used widely across the hills as a vegetable.

another use, but is a bit bad one and i am sure it will be banned here in the EU. when kids go naughty, some parents use this to smack them. used to happen till a few generations ago...not in my time (thank god, coz i was really naughty).

I am back

It was an amazing trip and I have no words for the roads of uttarakhand, the secenic beauty/calm of binsar/kausani and the hospitality of kumaonan people.

We started from Delhi on Friday and reached Binsar in the late evening via Moradabad->Haldwani->Bhimtal->Almora.

On 2nd day, we went to the zero point(half way), and then later we went for the bird watching trek, after that we did Jageshwar and Chitai temple and watched wonderful(almost best till date) sunset from Kasar Devi.

On 3rd Day after watching sunrise on a clearer sky, after that on the we went to Kausani via Bagheshwar and Baijnath and we do sipped the honey tea at Utaranchal tea co. Spent rest of the day in Kausani itself.

On 4th day, after leaving the kausani in afternoon drove back to Delhi via Someshwar->Ranikhet->Ramnagar-Kashipur-Moradabad. We reached delhi at 12AM after this hectic 1025 Km trip, but every second spent in the Kumaon was a treat.

Thanks everyone for their valuable suggestions. Will post more details and picture very soon.

Thanks all for the appreciation...I think the state govt and KMVN rocks for keeping the balance between development and nature.
