Getting around Kumaon
Hi Guys,
I'm wondering how to get around Kumaon, specifically from Nainital to Binsar and Jageshwar. Am I right in my impression that taxis are more expensive in this part of India? Are the buses too scary? Any impressions appreciated. |

The taxis will be a bit more expensive because of the terrain. However it didn't seem too bad to me. Last year I caught a maruti all the way from Kathkodem to Paparsalli which is about 25km shy of Binsar for 700 Rupees, This year I was in a Tata Suma 4WD which cost 900.
There are also what are known as shared taxis in which you basically pay for a seat, From Kathkodem to Almora this costs 80-90 Rupees. There are of course lots of buses, which can be quite scarey. My adivse stick with the state run buses they might be a little less comfortable but their drivers are at least experienced on the route they ply!! |

I always ride on the top of the bus, as it's safer in case of an accident and the view from there is amazing.Though they always tell me to come down but eventually give up and allow me to when I ignore them and say that I rode from here to here on top. Theres a bus to Jageshwar(love it there, must walk up to the ridge Vridda Jageshwar for an awesome view) from Almora. There wasn't a bus to Binsar when I was last in the area almost 9 years ago. You need a taxi to get there.

But would you really say it is safer after they have scraped you off whatever you land on?

Cyberhippie,
Sumos are not 4WD, that just have 4 X 4 stickers stuck on them. They are simple 2 Wheel Drives with high ground clearance. 99% of the Scorpios and all the Qualis are also 2 Wheel Drives. A 4 WD Scorpio has a towing hook built into the rear fender. But the most potent 4WD evan today is the Good old Gypsy. Styler |
