be careful
my god i live in dehra dun and i only now that it is a nightmare to travel from delhi to dehradun,if previous advisor says 5 hours, please add 2 hours to it,that is only if you dont enjoy driving rashly,
roads are of ordinary conditions with no dividers and it has traffic more than delhi -jaipur.the only lotus in this pond is cheetal where you can have a good meal.try the cheese omellette and cheese pakoras, though the burgers and rest are all nice. I use a different route but as a first time traveller you shud stick to this one. regards charat |

2. Get to Narinder Mohan Hospital, Mohan Nagar. If u take the Nizamuddin bridge, keep going straight past Noida Chauk/Akshardham flyover till u get to the flyover at the Wholesale Markets at Ghazipur Border. At the end of the flyover, turn left immediately. U'll pass Dabur and Bikanervala on your left. At the end of the road is NM Hospital. Turn right. If u take any of the other bridges, just go straight thru Shahdara til u get to the Hospital. 3. From NM Hospital, approx 3 km ahead turn left, under the large advertising board for M/s Coca Cola spanning both carriageways (An aside: this used to be a direction-board, but why give useful info, if u can earn money instead?). After turning left, if u see a large green direction board listing Dehradun, about 100 m ahead, u'll know you're on the right road (always useful to have a direction board placed AFTER a turn-off). This is NH 58. If not, u're on the wrong road - ask. 4. Straight thru Muradnagar and Modinagar till u get to a fork shortly before Meerut. Take the left road (Meerut Bypass) - the straight one goes into the city, and the traffic is nightmarish. 5. At the end of the bypass, turn left. Keep going straight ahead (na daaye na baaye) past Daurala and Khatauli, till u get to a circle short of Muzaffarnagar. To the right is the Muzaffarnagar Bypass. 6. At the end, turn right towards Roorkee and go straight ahead till u get to the circle at Roorkee Cantt. Turn left here. 7. The road will cross the Ganga Canal and curve to the right. There are 2 points where u will be at a crossing, always take the left turn. The landmark for the second is the Navin Mandi Sthal. If u get confused, just ask. Anyway, there are signboards. 7. Once out of Roorkee, you're on NH 73. Keep going straight ahead upto Chhutmalpur. Turn right here. 8. Now u're on NH 72A. Straight ahead will take u to Mohand and Dehradun. The Mohand-DD section is a forest road thru the Shivalik. The road surface is good except for a few bad spots between the end of the Meerut Bypass and Daurala, a bad 15 km stretch from Khatauli to short of the Muzaffarnagar bypass, and a few bad spots on the MZN bypass. Try to leave early. Then u can do it in 4.5 to 5 hours. Otherwise it cud be 6 or even 7 hours, as I experienced 2 days ago. Left at 1 pm from Delhi and it was a nightmarish 6.5 hours to the southern outskirts (7 till I exited at the northern end)- long convoys of buses and trucks really slowed things down, and no dividers makes overtaking like a game of Frogger. Why go via Saharanpur? The MZN-Deoband-Saharanpur stretch is bad and slower than via Roorkee. Last edited by machadinha : Jul 1st, 2007 at 11:08. Reason: merged posts |

Alternate routes
So as I found out a few weeks ago, the alternate routes to Dehradun have greatly improved and were a pleasure to drive on (with a few exceptions). A lot less traffic and none of the aggravation one gets on the 'traditional' NH 58/73 (altho they are in the process of 4-laning the 58. Hope they finish soon!!).
Route 1 - Muzaffarnagar Bypass (Rampur Tiraha)-Devband-Nagal-Gagalheri-Chhutmalpur. This is a variation on the standard route listed in posts above. At the end of the bypass, instead of turning right towards Roorkee, keep going straight (past the roundabout with the Netaji statue). This is SH 59 - you pass thru Devband (of Dar-ul-Uloom fame, in fact you go past the main gate) and Nagal till you get to Gagalheri. Here you turn right onto NH 73 (Panchkula-Yamunanagar-Saharanpur-Roorkee) and go upto Chhutmalpur, where you rejoin the traditional route coming from Roorkee. Keep going straight, i.e. on NH 72A to Dehradun. A few potholes exist between Nagal and Gagalheri, but other than that no problems. This route is actually slightly shorter too, by 4 km. And if you're ready to brave 5 km of thickish city traffic , you can go thru Muzaffarnagar city and save another 6 km, i.e. 10 km in all compared to the standard route. Perhaps better as an early-morning or late-night option. Once out of the city you go up a flyover over the railway line. At the end of the flyover you're at Rampur Tiraha, turn left here for Devband/Gagalheri. Route 2 - (return trip, so it's in reverse direction) via Saharanpur, i.e. Chhutmalpur-Gagalheri-Saharanpur-Nanauta-Thana Bhavan-Shamli-Baghpat-Loni-Delhi. At Gagalheri, keep going straight on NH 73 till Saharanpur. Turn left here (follow the signs). When you are out of the city, you'll be on SH 57, all the way to Loni border. The road is 2-lane all the way and in fantastic condition (with a few exceptions ). And with significantly less traffic specially trucks and buses, it saved me 30 minutes over the standard route, altho it wasn't as fast as before (a few others have discovered it too ).There are 5 railway crossings, all between Saharanpur and Shamli; plan to get held up at one at least. I was lucky, only 5 minutes. Traffic in Shamli is a bit of a mess, specially at the junction of the major roads coming from Panipat and Muzaffarnagar, what with flat-bed trucks trying to turn at a narrow intersection. Shud be ok early morning and late night though. Exceptions: A number of pot-holes exist between Nanauta and Thana Bhavan, which can be avoided by driving in the middle of the road . But then you have to watch out for the few that are in the middle of the road. ![]() Some more near Tronica City (near Loni), but........nothing as bad as what exists in Loni itself. Oh boy, talk about craters for at least 5 km! But inside Delhi, after getting past the junction of Loni Road and Wazirabad Road (Mangal Pandey Marg), things are fine. NOTE: It may be possible to avoid the Loni mess, becos there is a road from just outside Loni directly to Wazirabad Bridge. There is a large signboard at the northern end pointing to Wazirabad, becos of which I think the road may have been improved (last time I drove on it 6 years ago it wasn't in great condition). If anyone knows the condition of this road now (within Delhi it's the Yamuna Pushta Road), please update. The route via Saharanpur was also marginally shorter, by 4 km. But this can be even shorter by another 2-3 km, a) becos I didn't take the shortest route into the city, instead I went upto Wazirabad Bridge and then south on the Outer Ring Road, and b) if the a.m. road is in good condition. |

Update to NOTE above:
On my last drive from Dehradun to Delhi in early July, I took the Loni Bypass, which leads directly to Wazirabad Road via Yamuna Pushta Road. From the junction of the two a.m. roads, one can turn west to go across the Wazirabad bridge, or continue south to cross the old iron bridge behind Salimgarh Fort (near Red Fort/Yamuna Bazar). The first few km were a bit narrow and had some potholes (U.P. section - what else? ), but once over the Delhi border the road widens and is in better shape. All in all, this route is a MUCH better option (in both directions) than going thru the mess in Loni town as described above. |
