Best way to go from Dehradun to Kalka

Is there anyone who know the best way to go from Dehradun to Kalka? I couldn't find any easy ways only to go back to Dehli and then take the train...

IMO, the most convenient would be to take a taxi from Dehradun to Kalka - would take about 6 hours.
You could also think about taking the Dehradun- Amritsar express train to Ambala(~6 hours) , and then a train/bus/taxi to Kalka (~2 hours). But if i remember correctly, this train reaches Ambala at some ungodly hour in the night.

Are you going to Kalka just to take the train to Shimla? This is the longer way. I wud suggest u take a direct bus or taxi from DD to Shimla, and take the train on the way down.

You could take a bus to Yamunanagar/ Jagadhari or to Ambala and take a train to Kalka via Chandigarh.

It will be quite cold, just like Chandigarh or Delhi - 4-6 C at night. Hotels will generally provide enough bedding, but not many (maybe none in Kalka) have central heating. It wud be a good idea in general to carry a sleeping bag also if poss, u never know when one might be useful.

Surely there is a bus from Dehra Dun to Chandigarh, then make your way to Kalka.

If you just want to travel on the Kalka - Shimla train, and not the Shivalik Exp. (06:00 depearture), here is an option....

Saharanpur is the big transport hub in the area, it's 65kms from Dehra Dun, there should be loads of buses taking about 2 hours or less, check this out the day before, or you could get a cab.

Train 2231 departs Saharanpur daily at 07.35 and gets to Chandigarh at 09.55 (2A, 3A, SL.)

There are trains from Chandigarh at 10:28 and 11:10 heading to Kalka.

Train 255 departs Kalka daily at 12:10 and gets to Shimla at 17:20. (unreserved 2nd class only)

Yes, but this wud be purely an exercise in getting in as much train travel as poss and nothing else. DD to Saharanpur is 60 km, and the above wud require catching a bus around 5.30-6 am to Saharanpur (well off-route for Chandigarh/Kalka), only to have to change again at Chd. This when one cud simply leave a few hours later on a direct bus to Chandigarh. Or better still - Panchkula, a short hop from Kalka.

I agree completely.

Just giving the train options in case Johannna is like me, and will do anything to avoid buses.

If I were doing the above, and chose to go via Saharanpur, I'd get a cab to Saharanpur, the cab sould cover the distance in 90 minutes.

Having done the route again just last week and re-checked the distance, a correction is in order - it's 70 km.
You were closer than I was.
I even had it noted down somewhere from many years ago - dunno why I didn't check before posting previously.

Cool Don't stay at Kalka

I have found that Kalka is NOT a pleasant place to stay.

As Dilliwala suggested, go directly from Dehradun to Shimla. (In around 8 to 9 hours.)

Save yourself from the dump that Kalka is. Its just a transit point. Not worth staying at all.

Yes, I had that impression too about Kalka. A hop across the border to Parwanu is in order, as puchoo hinted. But a short hop (3 km) is sufficient - HPTDC is right there. And HPMC's juice outlet across the road is worth a visit.
