3 weeks and I want it all
Namaste all you beautiful people.
I'm looking for some itinerary ideas for three weeks in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan in Jan/Feb. Flying in and out of Delhi. 2 days in Lucknow for a wedding to begin with, then whatever. Agra is a must for the Taj. Otherwise it's flexible. Varanasi and Rishikesh maybe? For Rajasthan, Jaipur-Jodphur-Pushkar-Jaisalmer-Udaipur perhaps? Or is that a bit tight? Give me your views my friends out there in the ether. By the time I've finished this bottle of wine I will have a marvellous plan. |

It sounds (from your other messages) as if you've already spent some time in India, and so I'm surprised that you're at such a loss for what to do in those three weeks.
It'll be chilly and foggy in Delhi and Varanasi at that time of year. Do you have to fly out of Delhi, or can you change your flight and fly out of one of the more southern cities -- then you could go around Rajasthan and Gujerat and maybe Goa, and leave from Mumbai.

Here are some suggestions:
From Lucknow take a train to Varanasi. Spend two days there and take the direct train to Jodhpur. Spend a night in Jodhpur and take a night train to Jaisalmer. Spend three days in Jaisalmer, enjoy a camel safari, and return to Jodhpur by a night train. Have a car meet you at Jodhpur and drive to Rohet for a night. The car stays with you throughout from now. Visit the Bishnoi villages there. The next day drive to Udaipur stopping en route at Ranakpur to look at the temples there. Three days in Udaipur and on to Deogarh for a night. Deogarh to Pushkar for a night and then to Jaipur for three nights. From Jaipur drive to Ranthambore and take the safari in the Park. Next night at Agra from where you drive in the same car to Delhi for the rest of your trip. So the trip looks like this: Lucknow – 2 days Varanasi – 2 days Jodhpur – 1 day Jaisalmer – 3 nights Rohet – 1 day Udaipur – 3 days Deogarh – 1 day Pushkar – 1 day Jaipur – 3 days Ranthmbore – 1 day Agra – 1 day Delhi – 2 days This will give you a good idea of Rajasthan and you spend less time on the road since you will be spending three nights in a train (Varanasi – Jaipur, Jodhpur – Jaisalmer, and Jaisalmer – Jodhpur)

Thanks so much Lily and wonderwomanusa for taking the time to reply. Some good advice there. Yes WW, I've visited India before but only for two months so I wanted to get some extra ideas. We're pretty much tied to the Delhi flight because we have a wedding to go to in Lucknow to begin with. Sounds like a great itinerary Lily.

Is it possible to fly in to Delhi and fly out of Bombay? I thought this was difficult or expensive to arrange. I'll check it out.

Ask your travel agent or the airline. I'm not even PAYING for my ticket (frequent flyer miles) and I had quite a few choices.
Don't forget to reserve another day for sightseeing around Lucknow; there are a few things to see there, and a wonderful bazaar! |
