Thumbs up

The narrow gauge toy train for Ooty starts from a small broad gauge station named Mettupalayam (spelling may not be correct) in Tamil Nadu. This station is well connected to Chennai (Madras) by Nilgiri Express. Nilgiri Passenger (Blue Mountain Express), the toy train, is connected to the timing of Nilgiri Express. Nilgiri Express (broad gauge) starts from Chennai at around 20:00-21:00 IST and reaches Mettupalayam next morning. The toy train then starts after about half an hour and reaches Ooty around noon. I will check and let you know the exact timings soon and how you can book.

If you have enjoyed the toy train ride on the Neral-Matheran section, then I can assure you that you will be overjoyed by the the scenics in this section. Also try the famous Darjeeling toy train, Kalka-Shimla, and Kangra Valley railway, all of which are equally picturesque.

regards,

Bhaswaran

First class tickets are almost always available, you don't really need to worry about booking. And make sure you buy first class ticket(approx Rs.100) since the other sections will be very crowded.

If it is possible to book(I am not sure), you may be able to do that on irctc.co.in

There were no available 1st-class tickets the day we wanted a couple --- and that was in cold, wet, monsoon July.

You can book the toy train like any other train on irctc.co.in. I've recently booked tickets for the toy train in march. FC is said to provide the most scenic views.

Greetings, Mio

Train 662 departs Metupalaiyam daily at 07:10 and gets to Udagamandalam (Ooty) at 12:00.

Station codes for booking: -

Metupalaiyam - MTP
Udagamandalam - UAM

There is availability in First Class (seat) on the 22nd, then the 25th, Availability every day from then, but a waitlist on the 3rd, 6th and 18th of march, and on the 1st & 6th of April.

The times I've checked for availability, the train is normally booked for the next 10 to 14 days, so if you know the date you want to travel this route, book ahead.

I've never checked, but I'd bet availability is better going downhill.

There is an amusement park next to the lake, and you can go for a short ride on a horse.

no, haven't seen that. Have never seen that anywhere in India, but then again, I never was searching for a skatepark or so.
