The only place I've stayed at was the YWCA (I think it was in racecourse rd).

It was a pleasant location, rooms were adequate and the toilet/shower are on the other side of the corridor (ie. not an en-suite).

Not sure about the running of the trains or the weather - I was there in November.

Cheers

I stayed in a Sterling Resort, and would advise against it.

It was as cold and miserable inside as out. People were sitting in the restaurant wearing thick coats to eat, and they couldn't even manage to heat the plates so the food was stone cold before it got to the table.

September is a good season. I recommend the Hotel Tamil Nadu where you will get a very good off season rate for large clean rooms. The hotel is located on a quiet hillock barely 5min walking distance from the main Charring Cross and Commercial Street area. The only drawback is the food, breakfast is OK but do eat elsewhere for lunch and dinner, not a problem as there are several good options just 5 min away.
http://tamilnadutourism.org/ gives you online booking facilities.

About the toy train, I dont know if it runs in September, you could call Hotel TN or the TN tourist office and ask them. If you are coming from Coimbatore, I can recommend an excellent, safe and trustworthy driver - Jagadeesan whose services we have used many times. Let me know if you are interested.

Either way, go to Mettupalayam on the train. You can get a car from there and will be in Ooty in a couple of hours.

mhalder:
go to one or the other.
total waste of time visiting both - they're in the same vicinity.

bandipur

yes,

do only one. mudhumalai is enough for jeep or bus safari.

no need to go earlierly to catch bus safari in mudhumalai.several buses operate for jungle safari.

you dont need special permissions.

tamilnadu guest house is there, but you can easily return to ooty. if you wish to stay there, just ask there for availability.

mhalder,

You CAN book first class tickets in the toy train from mettupalayam to ooty. The fare would be around 150 rs i guess.
The train no is 662 and the journey uphill takes about
5 hours time.

Masinagudi is a small village just outside the Mudumalai Sanctuary, and on the way to Ooty from Mudumalai. At best it can be an option for accommodation as there are a few resorts in and around Masinagudi.

Yes, Coonoor could be clubbed with Avalanche in a Day (Avalanche is around 35 kms from Coonoor ). Not sure as if you take a package tour , Avalanche / Kunda / upper Bhavani / Kothagiri is NOT normally included and majority of tour operator will not show interest also and I heard to visit Avalanche and Upper Bhavani we need to take PWD / Forest Dept not sure thou...

From Coonoor, you need to take Mettupalayam road and after 9 kms , you need to take right turn for Avalanche (From this point Avalanche is 27 kms and a big signboard will be there).

And for 3 Days your plan is perfect!
Hope this helps.
