I will be heading to Ooty next year and for family reasons will be off down the hill to Lovedale. Is anybody familiar with this place? I know it has a train station and a school but apart from that and the fact that it looks really nice in photographs that is the extent of my knowledge. If anybody could share a bit of knowledge about Lovedale it would be a big help.

Lovedale is just a few kilometeres from Ooty and is a much more peaceful area. Ooty is less than ten minutes drive away, on a road that is fully 'developed' in terms of shops and stuff.
Residential, mainly, except for the schools. Small shops on the main road to Ooty. Good for walks off the main road/highway. Has a club of sorts which was closed last time I went there. We stayed there a few years ago, much preferred to the downtown areas of Ooty, at least.

Thanks for that, Captain. I'm trying to get some sense of the place - my dad (now passed on) went to school there in the 1940s and loved it so we're heading over for a look and to soak up the feel of the place.
I'm getting conflicting feelings about Ooty, though; some people seem to love it and others feel quite the opposite. Will have to try it for myself and see! Thenk you for your response. |

Parts of Ooty away from the centre are still reasonably quiet. But I much prefer the areas around Conoor and Kotagiri- and Lovedale, to stay.

These are the places that I am focussing on for building (or buying) my retirement place - with Nattu or if he passes on, another one (probably a yellow lab). I am interested in Coonoor, Lovedale, Kotagiri and was planning on making a trip last month that did not materialize. I will have to plan a trip for next year - when do you plan on visiting? I'm thinking of heading over this time next year with my sisters - this is going to require some logistical juggling as they live all over the place!

Sounds great. I am actually thinking of initially going during April next year - at IIT-KGP we have a 9 week summer break where we can do whatever we want (and get paid!) - most of us find this break to focus on our research with our Ph.D. students and to go abroad for conferences or what I prefer is to work in collaboration with someone else (the GOI has bilateral research programmes that we can write joint proposals and there is a competitive screening done to pick the ones selected for award - in most cases, this covers travel and room + board on a reciprocal basis). I have got one with a well known person at the Ioffe Inst in St. Petersburg, Russia and have proposals in the review stages - collaborators in Mexico, Portugal and Spain at this time. If I book accommodation well in advance I can spend 10 days surveying the Niligiris looking at various options that suits my needs. There are a couple of people from IM there and we can meet. I can then also make a trip during the Durga Puja vacation a year from now since we will have 2 weeks off. Cheers Nattusbs |
