Happy New Year Bhaswaran

Depends how low you mean by low cost!

Jokes apart, the Hotel Tamil Nadu run by TTDC offers a very good discount in off season which is right now. The location in Ooty is excellent and the rooms are clean and spacious, though the food is terrible. However there are a variety of food stalls and restaurants serving good food at a mere 5 min walk.

You can check availability and book online at http://www.ttdconline.com/User/HotelList.aspx

In Coonoor, Hotel Vivek is in a good location and also offers good off season discounts

The YMCA opposite the bus stand is very good - superbly located and in an old colonial-era house... a single room cost 250 rupees last year, so very cheap too.

The best thing would be to call them and make a booking - they shouldn't requite a deposit or anything just tell them you are coming. Double room should be in the range of 300 or so.

That is really, really cheap Greenears. Especially for Ooty. Is it with an attached bathroom?

@synonymous

There are double rooms with and without an attached bathroom - don't remember a huge difference in price. My guess is the YMCA runs the place on grants or some kind of a not-for-profit basis, that's why the prices are where they are.

just stayed at Reflections Guest House in Ooty for a couple of nights. It was (I think) 600 rs for a double. Hot water,attached bath, TV, clean and most importantly a comfy bed with a warm quilt because it was cool at night.
The hotel is about a five minute walk from the railway station, in the direction away from the city center (which is good!). Pretty much all the rooms have a lake view.
For unknown reasons, this place is slagged as 'unfriendly' in Lonely Planet. I had the opposite experience, the owner and staff were very friendly, very helpful and very short in stature! They easily and frugally organized trekking,laundry, long distance taxis etc.
