Guys,

will be coming down south next month with mom and sis. Needed some opinions on which of the places you'd recommend for a two day stay. We will be coming via Madurai., and returning via Coimbatore to Chennai and then to Delhi.

Besides spending two days at any one of the above destinations via coimbatore, another alternative is Madurai- Kodai- Coimbatore- Ooty- Coimbatore- Chennai.

Do let me know what y'all think. Do gimme your inputs - will be mucho appreciated. We need places to see. We won't be spending time at one place just clicking away to glory. With mom/sis, trekking/alot of walking is out of question as well.

Cheers and mucho thanks in advance,
Hitanshu

if you want a crowded busy hill station, choose ooty.

otherwise kodai and munnar are better. munnar is the quietest of the lot, i think.

if ooty, you could stay a couple of miles further, around lovedale. quieter but still accessible by car/local transport. not too much to see in ooty, though (busy botanical gardens, lake..), unless you fancy a trip through the tea gardens beyong wellington at kotagiri (one day trip up and down)

Workable, but Munnar is not one of those places to run around, see sights and pack in a day. Of course it is a personal thing, but for me Munnar is a place to be away from some of these time pressures and enjoy the ambience. I havent been to Kodai, but i believe the story could be similar.

1 day in Kodai & 1 day in Munnar. You can just about say you have been there. thats all. And its not about seeing all those "must-see" tourist spots. You can do much more there, like walking, cycling or just putting your feet up and have a lovely cup of tea, enjoying the morning mist and the greenery around you.

Just my perspective thats all..

OK, if you push me, i would suggest that you be in one place for 2 days. you can always come back for the other
miles to go....

My opinion is that there is little to do once you are in Kodai. Ooty is better - quite spread out with the largest commercial centre, a pleasant park and some nice walks. Don't forget the arrival by train of course: this is one of the highlights. Munnar, in my opinion, is the most pleasant of the three. Not so commercial as Ooty, but set in very picturesque tea-garden surroundings. A number of nice excursions, including Top Station and the nearby lake. Munnar has the smallest number of hotels of the three, but there is still a big enough selection to include everybody. Munnar is the cheapest, too.

I say check out Munnar, we stayed 2 days and it was great. A really nice break, the walks and treks through the tea gardens are really special. We also got some wonderful pictures.

I would say Munnar in itself offers little of interest, it's the surroundings that make it a worthwhile destination. As others have said an easy laid back place with lots of walking!! The day trip from Munnar were pretty interesting too!

hi,

if you are starting from madurai, the nearby station is kodaikanal.

munnar takes more time travel when compared with kodaikkanal.

if u want to avoid more time travel, kodaikkanl is best for 2 days.this town is also quit.very good climate and various sight seeing places to see.

munnar is surrounded by mostly tea estates. chillnes is slightly lesser than kodaikkanal.

if you want to visit calmness places, muunar is best.

if you want to enjoy chillnes climate, kodaikkanal is best.

if you want to around commercial places, various spots in one place, shopping places, etc. ooty is best.

in out side the ooty city, there were many more places likely to visit when compared to kodaikkanal and munnar.

if you like ooty, fly to coimbatore.

visit only one place for 2 days. dont go two places.this will not useful.

dont stay in city lodges.stay out side the city. try to asked somebody to eat homemade foods.

my recommendations,

ooty -

indu photo`s guest house.oppsite to hindustan photo factory.6 km from ooty.very very good place and reasonble fare(rs.375) room quality is equal to big hotels.

munnar :-

last time i stayed in homestay guest house named `kurunchi cottage`.located at teachers colony,3 km far from the city.they also prepared food(home style) at cottage. my family liked the food very much(both veg and non veg).

kodaikanal:-

nearby cookers walk,(2km) youth hostel named....if u visit that place, you wont go anyother places.it is very nice place and have good locations behind the hostel.dont miss it.

dont eat in hotels..try this accomadations or try to search homemade foods.

hope this will help you,let me know if any other information do you need...

I didn't like Ooty at all, was happy to leave after one night.
But the toy train was a cool experience. Especially because the steam lokomotive was made in my hometown Winterthur, Switzerland

dont agreed,

outside the ooty city there were several calmness places is likely to visit. definetly, there were places like, western catchment(very worth),7 mile, bykara boathouse, mudhumalai, bandipura ,dolphin nose, glenmargon etc.etc.are very nice to visit.

dont around the city. i am sure and and agreed that surrounding 6 kms are total waste and very crowdy etc.

but outer area, there is various places are available to enjoy..

later i will post ooty photos.

I don't doubt your words the least Suresh, after all it is a beautiful region.
A reason why I didn't like it was surely because it was freezing cold and rainy.
And the city is no beauty at all. Don't understand why people go there for honeymoon...
