How to reach KodaiKanal from Ooty

Hi,

I am travelling for 6-7 days to ooty - kodai kanal. I will be going to Coimbatore from there i shall go to ooty. Would like to know what transportation options are available from ooty to reach kodai kanal?

Also would like to know what transportation options are available from kodaikanal to reach coimbatore back to catch the flight?

Hi

You should take a cab from Ooty come back to Coimbatore Via Mettupalayam and then proceed to Kodai.

If you want to take the best roads, then the route is: Coimbatore - Pollachi - Udumalpet - Palani. From Palani, the route is upward journey in Kodai hills and it would take 2 hours of driving up hill.

Total distance via Palani is 170 kms.

Thanks for the reply , Will i get the cab directly from ooty or i will have to come to coimbatore to take the cab for kodai?
Also what would be the approximate cost fro the cab?

You would get a cab from Ooty itself. I'm not sure on the rates. But you would end up spending almost 7-8 hours travelling
OOty to Coimbatore takes almost 3 hrs ; Coimbatore to Kodai Road is another 3.5 hrs.. Kodai road to Kodaikanal will take another hour.

Alternatively, you can try the Coimbatore - Dharmapuri - Oddanchatram - Kodairoad route. some stretches are not that good but you would save about half an hour.

Private buses are also available between the two places. They are not luxurious but much cheaper as compared to taxis.

Hi Bhavik,

You take a cab from Coimbatore as it might be expensive to hire it from Ooty itself being a tourist spot. Check out the below link. You can check over phpne how much they charge for your Kodai trip and then make reservations online.

I suggest you take the toy train from Mettupalayam to Ooty when you proceed to Ooty on arrival. Its a great experience. there is only one train in the morning and you need to check the timings.

Bus from ooty or cab from coimbatore, both seems to be a good option. But want to explore more on the private buses.

You can take the bus too. its very economical and can reach coimbatore by spending less than 100 rs.

but atleast i would suggest you should travel by toy train either up or while coming down.

Coimbatore to Palani you can go by bus.Then take a cab from Palani to Kodai.You have to bargain a bit. The taxiwallah will say his rate to Kodai is only to the lake area and if you want to go to a hotel elswhere he will ask for more

Bhavik, if you want, you can get a quote by calling Jagadeesan taxi driver at 91 94423 70007, we use his taxi service whenever we are in that region. He is honest and reliable. Obviously it would be much cheaper if you took a bus to Coimbatore and a cab from there to Kodai and back.

If you take the cab from Ooty, then from Mettupalayam it is possible to bypass Coimbatore altogether and go through Annur to Palani and Kodai. It would still be a long drive.

It is of course your choice, but why not consider spending more time at Ooty exploring some other parts of the beautiful Nilgiris, instead of wasting a whole day in travelling to another hill station?
