Traveling in North-Tripura
Traveling in North-Tripura
I plan to visit Agartala (Tripura) next month and continue to Guawahati by road via Kailasahar and Silchar.
I wonder about the actual safety situation in North-Tripura. Travel guides are not that reassuring.
Lonely Planet (2009) speaks about things as: "Agartala-bound transport [from Silchar] has to join guarded military convoys, making progress dreadfully slow;" and "Reaching Kailasahar from Agartala requires transiting Tripura's most sensitive areas. Foreign tourists are very rare and will turn heads."
Does somebody on the Forum has actual information about the safety situation in North-Tripura?
Thank You,
Shima

Traveling in North-Tripura
I just visited Tripura and spent marvelous days in Agartala, Udaipur, Neermahal, Unakoti and surroundngs.
Everywhere I met friendly and helpful people. A yound lady offered me - being of age and travelling alone - her mobile number and email address "in case you would feel lonely in India" (quite a performance: feeling alone in India!)
I did not meet foreign travelers in Tripura.
As concerns road safety in Central North Tripura, let me contribute my five pennies:
I inquired about this subject in multiple places: a police station, a tourist office, a bus station, some traders on the road and some at random encounters (the joy of every traveller). Information gathered in this way was rather confusing and of no real help.
Finally my lazy-me prevailed and from Agartala I reached Kailasahar by private car.
In the northernmost part of the Highway section Agartala-Kailasahar i.e. south of Kumarghat army presence in the hills along the road is heavy although almost ever discreet. Most police and military roadblocks were unmanned. Never the car was halted nor papers were asked for.
Apparently public trafic by way of obligatory joining of guarded military convoys does actually not more take place.
Finally, only my driver proved to be a major road risk.
Thank you, Tripura.
