Hi Chandam and Fieldbio - I am really interested - would you please let me know the dates, iteneary, etc. so that I can figure out which works for me? There is a good chance I can be in India by the 18th August, but all will depend on flight availability. Also - I have looked at different websites regarding this trek and am a little worried about fitness levels...

Has anyone done this trip - please would you share your experience?

Check out the coverage. Otherwise this would have been perfect. It's not too expensive and it can be rented out on a weekly basis to hikers who want it.
I agree about the pound of flesh.
I searched a little more and I feel this option is very legal and doable. Portable ham radios.
Yaesu VX-7R that only weighs 9.8oz with a Diamond 1/4 wave antenna

I feel it would be perfect if we hikers can band together, get ham radio licenses(it's not too difficult , check out your local ham radio organization) and set up repeaters(that is regular ham radios) as a network of coverage for hikers.

People who live in areas like uttaranchal,hp etc will be particularly useful as they will extend the range into the remote trekking areas.
It;s not that hard to get a license either.

What do you say guys ?

I came to know that Satellite Phones are available for rent from Event Managing companies in Delhi and Mumbai.

Kalindi Khal is not for first timers even if you are a Marathon runner at sea level. It involves crossing a crevasse-ridden pass at almost 20,000 feet above sea level. Some tech-expertise with ice climbing may be needed and of course proper acclimatization.

For personal fitness, do brisk walking with a little bit of jogging every day for around 90 mins and you'll be fit for any moderate trek in a month. Choose any of the treks going upto 16000 feet or so and you will be fine.

Mikes and Worldancer,

Even organizing it from this end looks to be very difficult, I've only found one guide who is actually leading a trip this year (talk to Chandam). I have found one other guide who will be willing to go if enough people decide to go: it's Red Chili adventures in Rishikesh. I don't have the contact info with me but they may have a website and they are listed in Lonely Planet. I'm still interested in going, but right now I don't have a group or a guide so it looks like it probably won't happen. I have to be back in Delhi to fly home by Aug 3rd. You can contact me at fieldbio88 AT gmail .com

Char Dham and trek

Hi Fieldbio

I have decided not to attempt this particular trek, since I read a very extensive write up by someone and it really is too challenging for my experience... But I'm still planning to do some smaller treks (moderate level). Latest plan - looking to do the Char Dham Yatra (Yamonotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. In between I'm hoping to do a trek to Tapovan/Gaomukh (past Gangotri), and Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib, each of which are three days. Plus each of the temples involve treks (or pony rides).

I am however, open to looking at other options - as long as the treks are not the Kalindi Pass level..!

Regards.
