Yamunotri - Saptarishi kund
Hello,
Anybody has reached Saptarishi kund from Yamunotri ? Its been said that it is a fairly difficult 10km trek. I am planning to try this route in May. Any information about this route would help. Regards, Bharata. Last edited by Dilliwala : Sep 26th, 2008 at 04:44. Reason: merged multiple threads |

Saptarishi kund is long and hard but doable
I was there recently. It is a long trek but if you are really fit you can do it. It took us around 16 hours to go up and come down. While smaller kund had sort of greenish water but bigger kund next to glacier had thin layer of ice on it. It was quite a site to see small birds skate on it! It is a very serene place with semicircular glacier behind it and partly visible peak of Banderpunch. For guide ask for "Hariprasad" at GMVN place at Yamunotri.

saptarishi kund
Hi
RFI for Saptarishi Kund in October (moderately fit, limited trekking experience). A trekking agency we contacted were not willing to take us there. Also, have not come across any writeup by anyone who's done the trek, including on this forum. Our plan is to start at Hanuman Chatti, go up to Yamunotri, acclimatise for a day, go up to Saptarishi Kund and camp there for 2-3 days. Any info will be appreciated Thanks Ronnie |

There is proper trail from Yamunotri to Saptrishi Kund. On the upper part, the trail may vanish under snow.
You may find locals in Hanuman chatti who would be willing to take you to Saptrishi Kund. I had met one such local last May. He runs a rundown lodge in Hanuman chatti. He promised to take me to Saptrishi kund and even upto Bali Pass. I dont rmemeber his name. His lodge is just near the GMVN TRH. Ask locals for him. He has gone to Bali pass several times to find the "Blue Sapphire". Ask the locals. Bali pass is supposed to have lots of reserves of raw sapphire.. ![]()

Saptarishi kund
Saptarishi Kund is the original source of Yamuna fed by Champasar Glacier situated in the upper parts of the massif created by Banderpunch that straddles the Yamunotri valley.
Visited there way back in 2003. The route is to the right of the entry to Yamunotri temple area (where the shops begin). There is a trail that leads up on the hill side on which Yamunotri temple is situated. We had traversed from Hanumanchatti to Yamunotri and then upto a small camp site about 4 Kms up hill situated on a little spur between 2 rivulets. The next day one had a steep climb of another 3/4 kms up from there...the trail gets into sharp switchbacks for a good 2 kms and then leads on to a small valley sort of area which you get into. The last part is where on has to climb with all fours....not technical...but pretty strenuous. I do not recommend camping there unless you are properly equipped...its in the midst of glacier kingdom and weather changes are pretty sharp. I had taken a guide called Swarup Lal from Kharsali Village and a local nepali porter. Bali Pass on the other hand is on a route that leads to the left near Devdekhni (about a Km before approaching Yamunotri temple). |

Yamunotri to Saptrishi trek
Hi Guys,
Does anybody trekked Saptrishi Kund form Yamunotri? I have read few articles about it but never heard any discussion about it on this forum. I have few questions: 1) Best time?? ( I guess May to Oct) 2) Trek type?? ( hard ) 3) Days Required from Delhi? 4) Do we need porters & tents? Thanks Gramin |

Avoid monsoons...or find a sunny window within monsoons...the trek is only a 2 day one.
You need to camp midway...so take tent and porters The trail rises onto a spur on the true left of Yamuna and you need to camp after about 4/5 kilometers. There is a little clearing on a spur overlooking the yamuna valley amidst two waerfalls. Start early next day for the kund....and come back to janaki chatti.... |

Thanks! Though after looking at your Dumdarkandi pics, that's where I'd like to go next.
