white water rafting for a chicken?
Has anyone had experience of white water rafting on the Ganges (from near Rishikesh)? I've never done it before, but I'm pretty outdoorsy (if a bit of a scaredy cat), would prefer one which is aimed at amateurs!
I like the sound of the ones were you take all your stuff with you and camp at a different place along the river each night. Thinking of doing it sometime in 2005, maybe in early March. I've had a quick browse on the web and seen a price of 4800 Rs for 3 nights - is that about average? Also, will it be possible to book it from Rishikesh when I arrive? |

The day trip is more of a gentle float down the Ganga than a hair raising rafting experience! I mean the thrills are there but a lot of time is just spent slowly heading down river and admiring the scenery!
We had an awesome Lunch on a silt beach on the banks of the Ganga, delicious and what a setting! Go for it a very enjoyable experience, the Rafting pn the Kali river near Danadeli Karnataka is also superb and even easier! |

I did some whitewater rafting from just above Rishikesh. It was fun- I am a bit of a chicken myself. My boyfriend booked it from Rishikesh and I went along for the ride. Had I known what I was in for before we started, I would have stayed at the ashram and done yoga, but when it was over, I was so glad I did it. After the rapids, you can just float back to Rishikesh without the boat...it's glorious!
Have fun! I'll be in Rishikesh in two days. Yeah! |

1 Day Rafting For Beginner
I would say, you have nothing to be worried even if you can't swim. In March, stay clear of the grade 4 rapid - "The Wall". There is a lot of hype around and its whirlpool does look menacing. You might get scared and make life tough for the rescuers, if you should fall into it. However, nothing ever to be scared of. You will see old and fat aunties do the lower stretches. However, when you are actually facing the first rapid for the first time, you would appreciate that those aunties do have to be appreciated. |

You'll love it
I went just a few weekends ago with some coworkers and it was a fantastic experience! I had never been rafting before, so I was a little apprehensive too, but the guides are great and it's really not that dangerous. One of my friends complained on the last day that it was too easy and the guide said, "Well, you make it what you want...you have been going on the sides, but if you want to go straight on, then we can go straight on!!". Needless to say, we went 'straight on'. Two of our friends fell out of the raft (we are newbies), but it was easy getting them back in and we didn't feel at risk at all. The guides know what they are doing and you'll be just fine. I recommend camping on the river. We stayed overnight and we sat by the campfire at night, playing guitar and drinking. Have fun!!

The kaudaliya to Marine drive stretch has a some challaneging rapids.. you can avoid that stretch..
The marine drive to shivpuri is placid stretch. I have seen aunties, kiddies all rafting on this stretch.. The last stretch (Shivpuri - rishikesh) is more exciting but less riskier than the kaudiya stretch.. I have done it last year in March.. It was exciting..
