Lightbulb Which is the most spectacular Glacier?

Having done quite a few treks and developed a fascination for Glaciers, I have decided to document them before they actually disappear! So here's the question, which is the most spectacular Glacier you have seen?

I'm specially interested in the temporal ones where you stand a good chance of seeing avalanches, seracs crash or hearing the whole Glacier creak as it moves . . . Short film I'm thinking

ps. Just realised that's my 500th post

TJ congratulations on your 500th post. I have trekked some but never really paid attention to glaciers rather stayed away from them as they are so tricky to cross.

Thanks Mridula

They are tricky to cross, but well worth it for the views they afford in my opinion, but then not having fallen into a crevasse yet I consider myself lucky!!

Umsai la glacier is my personal favorite, along with the frozen start of the Zanskar en route Pensi la . . .

What area of the world you are talking about?

The most impressive I have seen have been Columbia glacier, which is a fresh water glacier. Most fascinating thing I've seen is the Harding ice field, though it is not exactly a glacier. The best trail of my life was a trail called Iceline in Yoho national park in Canada that takes you past a large number of glaciers.

In India, I have only had the fortune to see some unnamed glaciers in the Badrinath area.

I thought I didn't have to specify . . . it is 'India' mike right?!

I meant in the Himalayas . . . India, Nepal or Bhutan, leaving out Pakistan since the mountains are off limits to Indians!

Columbia has glaciers??? I can imagine Canada has some . . .

Pindari & Kafni Glacier are pretty remarkable. Especially if u go to the Zero point. Can actually see the ice breaking & moving into the river.

A pretty impressive view all the way to Pindari Glacier. Takes abut 6 days Trek to reach there.,

Cheers

I have seen pics of banderpunchh glacier in one fellow indiamiker's picasa gallery. I am very much impressed with that.

Indeed those pictures are really spectacular, looks like one heavily crevassed ice field there! With the Kala nag looming over it, and it should be easier to get to than the Pindari!

Would love to go to Siachen, but the army seems to have a monopoly on that one!

Any one been ahead of Har ki dun, I hear there is a Glacier which is lifted off the ground enough to walk under for quite a distance!

I think that would be the Columbia Glacier in Alaska It seems to be so named after Columbia University, in New York.

The country of Colombia on the other hand like some of its neighbors would be dominated by the Andes mountain range, and so will have its share of peaks yes; and a quick search would suggest there are glaciers, too.

Anyway, so much for today's pedantry, kindly do continue

Thanks, Machadinha! Indeed it was the Columbia glacier in Alaska. Up there, there are thousands of glaciers, many retreating but some are advancing too - one that I've seen is the Hubbard glacier.

I find it interesting to learn that while most glaciers in the the Eastern Himalayas are retreating, there are some in Karakoram range and Western Himalayas that are advancing. Perhaps some of the budding glacier enthusiasts can throw some light on the relevant facts.

I think you are talking about the Yamdwara Glacier. Yes it is retreating fast. Also number of crevasse are increasing. It is possible to cross it and reach Harsil area but with passing time it is getting difficult.
