| Where to trek in late August? am taking my 25-year-old nephew who's never been to india for a brief 10-day visit in late august. to escape the heat i want to do a 4-5 day trek somewhere in the mountains, but am concerned about being rained on every day. is there anyplace where the rainy season will have ended by the latter half of august? i'm looking for a trek that will be fully portered (i.e., the outfitter supplies tents, sleeping bags and does the cooking). we'd like to hike 6-8 hours per day and not go above 3000-3500 m. any suggestions from you well-traveled trekkers? thanks in advance for your ideas. |

In august, the monsoons will be in full force. But if you like nature and greenery, it is the best time. the hills will be lush green. however, for viewing distant peaks, you will have to wait for the clouds to clear ... usually in the mornings. Bedni bugyal can be a great trek. the bugyals are meadows above the tree line. the trees grow till roughly 3000m. then till 3500 m you have the grassy meadows. beyond that, the terrain becomes more rocky. It can be fully portered, and the porters do cooking also. they usually make maggie, but if you specifically ask them, they can make rice, lentils, paranthas, etc. check this link for various pics and trek reports. this will give you an idea of the place. http://almoraboy.blogspot.com/2006/0...himalayas.html we did bedni during august 06, so this will give you an exact idea of how the hills look like during august. another easy trek can be khalia top near munsyari. the trek report and pics for the same are also given on the same page. soem contact detaisl for drivers/guides is given here: http://almoraboy.blogspot.com/2006/0...formation.html happy trekking.

2. But if you still insist on going to Ladakh/Zanskar, I am ready to help you. Your nephew is 25. How old are you? How many are you? How much trekking have you done in the past? Since I like to make people see new places in the Himalaya, I will try to give you all the information/help you need. | |

| vaibhav kaul: i want to avoid the rain because otherwise i will never persuade my nephew to come! i'm the experienced trekker, not he, and it's already a stretch for him to sleep in a tent. he will never agree to a trek if it's rainy. |

| If you want to avoid the rains its Ladakh. Problem is most treks cross 5000m Passes. The Capital Leh, is at 3550m. Not a problem, though. Fly into Leh and just loaf around doing small shopping walks for three days. This will help you acclimatize. This acclimatization is VERY NECESSARY. NO STRENOUS walks in the first two days. A long walk for say three hours on the third day and you are ready to trek the fourth day. There are many treks out of Leh. Just go through the trekking forum. . .

| Catheal, Do you want me to suggest easy four-day treks in Ladakh/Zanskar? The only problem is that the max altitude may cross the 3500 m mark. You may have to cross 3600-4000 m high ridges. Leh based trekking/travel agencies are very efficient. Tell them which trek you want to do and they will make all arrangements. Avid Trekker's suggestion is very valuable. The Acclimatisation Factor should never be ignored. You must read about Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), HAPO and HACO before going to Ladakh. |
