We are planning a visit to valley of flowers and Hemkund in the last week of August. Is that too late as I ahve read that peak season is mid July to mid August.
Also, is it better to go through a travel agency? there are lots of them offering different packages? Some of our freinds havent taken any package and are going to figure things out during the trip..not sure how ok that would be. Please advise. |

Quite late.
If you enjoy trekking in the rains, then this is the best time. Also, plz do prepare mentally for frequent land-slides.

when we i went there along with my friend in 3rd week of July last year we were told it was early by many ppl there, cause flowers are in full bloom in august and in early September(and we cud make out that from the pics we had seen ) and yes since it was rainy season our bus had stops in between both while coming and going on NH-58 due landslides but otherwise rain didnt pose much of problem, if ur going get some good ponchos.

We hiked to Hemkund in late August, we had intended to go to the Valley of Flowers too, but it was constantly overcast and drizzling of rain so we did not do it. On the other hand we had some clear weather when we were in Badrinath. It is really a matter of chance, though the odds are against good weather as there is no rain shadow. You might condider to do a trek in an area that is less exposed to the monsoon, some area with large ranges south of it. The pilgrimage trail to Amarnath is incredibly beautiful, there are also some nice hike in Lahul and Spiti.
Why waste your money on a travel agency. Everything you need, food and shelter, is available along the trail. |

Given that north India is facing severe rain defeciency this season, would week of 10 Aug 2009 still be a good time to visit the Valley of Flowers. Would there be good amount of flowers to see ?

Main season for Valley of Flowers(when many various flowers bloom) is July & August. So even if there's delay in monsoon in north India there definitely gonna be good amount of flowers to see in August.

But, these being sesonal flowers, wouldn't the change in sesonal charecteristics have an impact on their flowering ? would anybody know if there is any delay in the rains at VOF ? or, is it too early to ask that question ?
