considering everything... this is the worst trek/pilgrim route i've seen in my limited himalayan experience!!

moreover the places are litered with empty plastic bottles, chocolate/candy wrappers despite of the numerous signboards making aware the tourist of delicate ecological balance of the area...

Agree completely, although with the rapid pace with which the trek routes are being made a dumping ground by tourists, its difficult to say which one is the dirtiest.

It is unfortunate but true - as hitherto inaccessible trekking routes and hill stations begin to be advertised as far-from-the-maddening-crowd destinations - people begin thronging these places in hordes. The tourism department goes gaga advertising it, the local people utilize it as a means to earning a livelihood but the city-bred folks use their wealth to soak in the charms and sadly, soil these places with their incorrigible habits.

Mussoorie and similar popular hill stations have an efficient system of cleaning up the litter but smaller hamlets and trekking destinations don't. Its easy for us to chuck non bio-degradable plastic items in the foliage without worrying about its long-term effects besides being an eyesore!

A few months ago while driving through Mukteswar forest enroute to Ramgarh I came across a small restaurant cresting a hill and opposite this joint in a shallow pit by the roadside was a big garbage dump. It was clear where it came from and it didnt look like anyone was in a hurry to dispose it off....sad but true!!

We need to change our habits and pronto!

:-)

Hi

Hi,how are you all doing?
Actually i wanted some info. i now i might be starting on the wrong foot here but couldn't help asking after seeing the in-depth knowledge that people here possess.
Actually i m planning a trip to Gangotri on my own;quite a late start you can say at the age of 26,just got tired of waiting for company. My friends have been dissuading me from going there due to bad road conditions and snow fall.I am planning to leave on 23rd October from Delhi.I just wanted to check how much can i traverse in around 7 days and also the logistics;would be grateful if anyone can help.My original plans are to make it till tapovan if the weather gods permit and;i don't have any reservations.
It would be of immense help if anyone could help me out.
Thanks!

free spirit, you can go upto tapovan but make sure you carry tent and sleeping bag. now a days ONLY trekkers are going since gangotri temple is closed. and also you would be needing permit to go ahead of gangotri which you will get from uttarkashi

Hi

Hi Tilak,
thanks for the info, but i am on bare minimums...i don't have any experience in trekking..i can surely manage a permit from uttarkashi as i've planned a day's stopover there.I don't have a tent or a sleeping bag,the list is long for things i don't have...things i have would include woolens,a backpack and some cash. Also i am alone.

if this is the situation then i would suggest you not to venture ahead of gangotri. even if you decide to go then approach any of the numerous treking agencies at uttarkashi, they will arrange for everything.
and being alone is best

Hiya...

Its none of my business, I agree...
And I'm the last person who will have something negative to say about solo trekking...

But as a well-wisher, all I can say is this...
This is not the season to start off on a solo trek...
Especially, if its going to be your very first one...!
Not where you are planning to head off to...
Definitely not Tapovan side...
I've got feedback on some horror stories for last month (September) too...

If you havent left as yet, plan for a trek elsewhere...
There are lots of places in Uttarakhand which will have lovely treks at this time of the year...

Cheers...!

Hope you have a good trip...!
And thanks for the nice words...!

One option from Uttarkashi is Dayara Bugyal.
And seriously, for people interested in this lovely place, the best time to do it would be soon, very soon...

Unfortunately, there was a full page article on the place in today's Mail Today, a newspaper in the Capital. The Gandhi scion, Rahul, apparently made a trip there recently, along with his entourage of 28...! Very soon, everyone, trekkers or not, would like to visit the place which has got this unnecessary publicity, especially because a particular person visited it...!

Hopefully, people will forget about this article and also about the place...

And just let Dayara Bugyal be...
The way it is now...
Heaven...

One can only hope...

Cheers...!

hi everyone,

im plannig a trip to india in the summer and hemkund sahib and the valley of flowers are a major must for me.

as i have a limited amount of time i was wondering how much time id need to get from delhi to hemkund and the vof and back down to haridwar so i can continue my journey.

a list of the travel and accommodation costs would also be helpful as this is all new to me and i want to be sure about everything.

is it possible in 4 days, 5 at the most? what equipment will i need? what kind of condition healthwise do i have to be in? where would my projected stop overs be/ what would be the common day to day itinerary? would 3000rs be enough for the journey?

thanyou for any help that can be given

hi seetz2...

you'll get all the comprehensive information on this thread itself... you would need to spend a bit of time browzing through atleast some of the pages; and rest assured, all your questions, even the ones you havent asked, will get answered here...!

the season is still a good 8 months away... so you have lots of time to plan and also to check out the thread...!

cheers...!
