From the wikipedia atricle on World Heritage Sites
Quote:
Natural criteria
(vii) "contains superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance"
(viii) "is an outstanding example representing major stages of Earth's history, including the record of life, significant on-going geological processes in the development of landforms, or significant geomorphic or physiographic features"
(ix) "is an outstanding example representing significant on-going ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, fresh water, coastal and marine ecosystems, and communities of plants and animals"
(x) "contains the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including those containing threatened species of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation"
According to Unesco, VOF meets criteria vii and x. So yeah, simply being beautiful was one of the reasons that it was chosen.

Night stay at Hemkund?

Guys,

I'm already aware of the fact that night stay at Hemkund is not allowed. But I've also read somewhere that only 'sevadars' can stay at Hemkund in the night. Also some people also say that no one stays at Hemkund! Let me know which one of the above two is true.

Travel buddies around Aug 10?

Hello! I'm planning a trip for about 10 days from Ahmedabad up to Uttarakhand (perhaps over to Kashmir too) and I'm wondering if anyone else will be traveling in the area too. I'm a 28-yr-old grad student guy and looking to do some scenic (but not overly intense) trekking. Lemme know if you'd be interested in meeting up.

Also, anyone know what the weather is like up there now? And the security situation in Jammu & Kashmir?

Safe travels!

Hi Chandan,

I have been reading a lot about the VOF thru this forum and thru other sources too available in the net and books and have been really fascinated to visit this place since 2009. Finally this year I have my plans ready and i am all set to go for this trip. Have been reading yours and solo trekkers advices all thru this thread and thought of taking a word of advice and all get my doubts cleared from the horse’s mouth. Hope you would not hesitate to answer me. So here I start about my trip:
I would be travelling with my husband and for the 1st time we would be travelling all by ourselves (no travel agents/no cabs hired/no advanced booking for hotels done etc.).

Our itinerary is as follows:
1) Day one: 10th night we are planning to leave Delhi by bus reaching Haridwar on 11th early morning.
2) Day two : 11th Haridwar to Josiamath (taking the rainy season and the road/landslide condition into consideration please advise what would be the safest mode of transportation (GMVN busses or shared taxi's) for this stretch, as this would be the longest stretch).
3) Day three: 12th Josiamath to GovindGhat to Ghangaria
4) Day four: 13th Ghangaria to VOF and back
5) Day five: 14th Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib and back
6) Day six: 15th Ghangaria to GovindGhat to Badrinath
(Will it be possible for us to visit Manna village and Vashudhara falls the same day?? If not then we would have to keep it for the next day and then we would also like to club Auli with it)
SO day six would either be “6) Day six: 15th Ghangaria to GovindGhat to Badrinath”
Or: “6) Day six: 15th Ghangaria to GovindGhat to Badrinath to Manna village to Vashudhara falls and night halt at Badrinath)
7) Day seven: 16th: If day for day 6 the 2nd option is doable then day seven would be like: Badrinath to Auli to Josiamath.
Or else: Badrinath to Manna village to Vashudhara falls (back to Badrinath) then to Auli and night halt at Joshiamath.
8) Day eight: 17th: Joshiamath to Haridwar and we are planning to take the Dheradun Shatabi that leaves at 6:00pm for Delhi. (Will we be able to make up for that train? How early should we start from Joshiamath to reach Haridwar on time and here again comes the same question “please advise a safe mode of transportation”.
So this was all about my itinerary. Please advice, if it is good to go with.

Now here are my various concerns about this entire trip.
First is about the season. Known fact is peak monsoon is the best time to visit this place; however would still need your expertise on the safety measures. My major concern is about the roads/transportation. As our travel dates are nearing I have been glued to the internet reading about the weather reports and the daily news about this place and believe me I have been shit scared with the recent news about the road accidents that have been happening. Is it because the roads are too scary or is it because of rash /careless driving? As my major concern is just regarding the bus/taxi transportation, would request you to please advise the safest mode of transportation. Are the government run busses; the GMVN busses the safest options? Also would request you to advise me on the timings.

Secondly my concern is about hotels in Ghangaria as we have not done any bookings till date.

Third and the last but not the least concern/advice is on what are the essential things that should not be forgotten.

Eagerly waiting for your response.

PS: If anyone could update us on the recent weather report and road conditions from this place then it would be of great help..

I would be travelling with my husband and for the 1st time we would be travelling all by ourselves (no travel agents/no cabs hired/no advanced booking for hotels done etc.). well done

Our itinerary is as follows:
1) Day one: 10th night we are planning to leave Delhi by bus reaching Haridwar on 11th early morning.on safety ground I would suggest train
2) Day two : 11th Haridwar to Josiamath (taking the rainy season and the road/landslide condition into consideration please advise what would be the safest mode of transportation (GMVN busses or shared taxi's) for this stretch, as this would be the longest stretch). in august this 'could' be a challenge. I do not completely rule it out though. Be prepared to spend your night at other places on the way such as Chamoli or pipalkoti. Even if you manage to reach this far on that day then you have won the battle. Shared taxi would be my advise. pay driver extra money to get seat in the front row. you will thank me for this advise. Buses will make you more sick due to height of their seats. moreover things appear more scary from buses.
3) Day three: 12th Josiamath to GovindGhat to Ghangaria irrespective of whether you stay last night at chamoli or joshimath, you could still reach Ghangaria by late evening. very easily doable.
4) Day four: 13th Ghangaria to VOF and back fine
5) Day five: 14th Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib and back no problem. very relaxed schedule. Good
6) Day six: 15th Ghangaria to GovindGhat to Badrinath Leave GHangaria very early in the morning. By 5 am you should be trekking towards Govindghat. mind you,Ghangaria wakes up at 4:00 am. All shops are open by then. early start from Ghangaria is more or less a norm so do not hesitate from doing it. It is very crucial if you want to visit vasudhara fall same day. You will reach Govind ghat by 9 pm approx. By 11 am you should reach badrinath. (in worst case by 12:00).PLease donot sit for too long at ny tea shop and waste your precious time admiring nature. At Badrinath, don't visit temple ( assuming you aren't overly religious ) rather go straight to mana village first, which is 3 kms from badrinath by road. You can see fall from there at a distance. Fall is approx 3-4 kms easy trek from there. By this time you would have done enough trekking ( Hemkund sahib )so you would find vasudhara fall trek like an evening stroll. You will be back by 5pm latest. Cover manna village caves etc and then stay at badrinath. Obvious you will be carrying all eatable etc to be eaten on the way. can you do all this? if yes then it's doable. You could cover Badrinath temple first thing next morning. IMPORTANT: you have another option which is more practical. start for hemkund on day five at same time and leave hemkund by 12 or 1 pm. Move straight towards govindghat. Take you time... stay overnight at Govind ghat.. lot of options available. in august you will find empty hotels quite easily. Next day you have full day to be spent at Badrinath
Or else: Badrinath to Manna village to Vashudhara falls (back to Badrinath) then to Auli and night halt at Joshiamath. well, I would avoid Auli at that time of year because possiblity of seeing nanda devi would be low due to cloud cover and possiblity of seeing snow absolutely NIL. so why go there ? it's upto you.
8) Day eight: 17th: Joshiamath to Haridwar and we are planning to take the Dheradun Shatabi that leaves at 6:00pm for Delhi. as mentioned earlier, it depends upon weather and road conditions.(Will we be able to make up for that train? How early should we start from Joshiamath to reach Haridwar on time and here again comes the same question “please advise a safe mode of transportation”.
So this was all about my itinerary. Please advice, if it is good to go with.

Now here are my various concerns about this entire trip.
First is about the season. my previous posts have discouraged people from venturing into himalayas during monsoon. My views of VOF in general and specific to monsoon season is also well known to others s it's your call entirely. you got to show me some nice pics to change my viewsKnown fact is peak monsoon is the best time to visit this place I disagree. VOF may look bit better than what we see either in june/july or in september but during monsoon season you have cloud that usually cover glorious snow laden peaks in vicinity , sorry cant remeber their names, and along with flowers there will be lot of thick bushes. People usually justify what they do hence I will let you make this call.; however would still need your expertise on the safety measures. My major concern is about the roads/transportation. As our travel dates are nearing I have been glued to the internet reading about the weather reports and the daily news about this place and believe me I have been shit scared with the recent news about the road accidents that have been happening. nothing to be scared of.. realistically worst outcome of landslides could be severe delays in your jouney which at worst could screw whole of your plan. Poor roads during monsoon has a silver lining too. drivers are forced to drive slowly hence low possiblity of accidents Is it because the roads are too scary or is it because of rash /careless driving? As my major concern is just regarding the bus/taxi transportation, would request you to please advise the safest mode of transportation.as advised earlier, shared taxi WITH SEATS IN FRONT ROW Are the government run busses; the GMVN busses the safest options? How much trust do you have in government and it's working practices? if you trust Govt then go in their buses. SInce I do not so I never use them purely on the ground that they are run my govt. mind you , driver might have got his place against some quota. NOTE: I am not against any caste or religion but I am against quota system. Please go for shared taxis. Also would request you to advise me on the timings.

Secondly my concern is about hotels in Ghangaria as we have not done any bookings till dateyou NEVER have any problem finding hotels at Ghangaria. in August, you could get rooms for Rs 500-600 with 2-3 beds. please bear in mind that you will be enroute hemkund sahib and sikh community is very helpful in general. worst come worst, there is a gurudwara at Ghangaria so you can stay there

Third and the last but not the least concern/advice is on what are the essential things that should not be forgotten. To give you a rough idea: a parleG biscuit in Delhi usually costs Rs 4, at Govindghat around Rs 10 and at Ghangaria , Rs 20. . PLease carry 2 torches. please read my previous posts for the reason. In general you will never trek alone

Eagerly waiting for your response.

PS: If anyone could update us on the recent weather report and road conditions from this place then it would be of great help..

If ( but a very big one ) roads are ok and provided you start very early in the morning then you can do it. mind you, checkpost people wont let you go beyond joshimath after 8 pm. Shell out Rs 50-100 and you are free to wander wherever you want and whenever you want. every thing happens in india. BUT why to take this pain. Even if you stay at pipalkoti or joshimath first night, still you can very easily reach Ghangaria next day.
