If you want to book in advance, you can book GMVN at Ghanghariya.

Hiya...!!!

Hi Guys...!

I'm posting on this most favourite thread of mine after a period of 8 months...!
Glad to know its already on autopilot now...!

To the people who had specifically asked me questions, well, I'm sorry I never got around to answering them... But then, they were answered, by equally and even more experienced trekkers...!

To those who are planning a trip to the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib in June - Watch out for the Pilgrim Tourist Rush...! There are hardly any flowers in June... The Glaciers are still frozen... The scenery is terrific... The trek up to Hemkund Sahib is at its challenging best...

July would have the Sunflowers... And the paths would be all slushy with the constant rain... Be prepared to get wet in the rain... And enjoy the beauty of the Valley of Flowers...

August is the best time... Best compromise you can reach really... The best trade-off between the rains and the flowers and everything being open...! But sadly, no sun-flowers...!

September is fine... Less rush... Less rains...
But also, less flowers in the valley...

Watch out for the Swiss National Flower - The Edelweiss (the Himalayan variety) in the Valley of Flowers... Remember the lovely song from the movie "The Sound of Music"...?

The Cobra Lillies... (You can't miss them)
The Blue Poppies... (You'll have to really look hard for them)
The Brahma Kamals (found all around the Hemkund Sahib...)

Soo... Make your plans for a trip to Heaven n back...!

Cheers...!

Himalayan Trek - Govind Ghat to Ghanghariahttp://anandway.com/articles.aspx?Vi...haria&link=252

At 8.00 a.m. we crossed the single span bridge across frothing Alaknanada. This bridge at Govind Ghat by the road to Badrinath marks the beginning of our trek. We are heading for Hemkund and Valley of Flowers with a stopover at Ghangharia.

GMVN package vs going by self

Me & my wife are planning to go for the VOF/hemkund trek this july/aug, i enquired with GMVN and they have a package ex-rishikesh @ rs 7800/- per head which included traportation & stay also covers badrinath & auli for 7 nights. Can anyone tell me whether it will be cheaper if we go by ourselves. Is it easy to get transportaion from haridwar to josimath / josimath to govindghat etc ?......

If you do it on your own in public transport, it'll be definitely cheaper......If you opt for a taxi, GMVN package will be better.

Plenty of buses are available for doing it on your own....

Travelling on your own will definately be cheaper, travel on local buses if you like you can book hotels however ,i guess hotels are avaliable all the time as people stay at the max for three days.

their package is fine if you don't want to get involved in the little things of travelling, if you go on your own it will be a bit cheaper, say 10K instead of 15K
approx
Rs4.5 - 8 per km taxi
govind ghat stay at the gurdwara(free) family usually get rooms easily, even easier in august which is off season

Hi all!
I'm planning a trip to the Valley of Flowers and Hemkundh Sahib this may. This is my plan:
24th May - Reach Delhi from Hyderabad in the morning and leave for Rishikesh. Night halt at Rishikesh
25th May - Leave for Joshimath. Night halt at Joshimath
26th May - Leave for Govindghat and trek to Ghangria, overnight stay at Ghangria
27th May - Trek to the Valley of Flowers, stay overnight again at Ghangria
28th May - Trek to Hemkund Sahib, stay overnight at Ghangria
29th May - Leave for Joshimath, overnight stay
30th May - Back to Rishikesh.

Any suggestions on the plan, places to put up would be most welcome. Also, is May a good time to go there?
Thanks !

These places open in early June. You shud postpone by a week at least, the later the more flowers you'll see.

It's a long drive Rishikesh-Joshimath v.v. even with own car and shud ideally be shortened. How are you travelling Del-Rishi and Rishi-J'math?
