Hi. My plan is to land in New Delhi in the next few days, purchase some trekking equipment and do some trekking through Uttarakhand.

I understand that there are trekking options during this time of year (september - november). Milam Glacier, Kuari Pass, Har Ki Dun, Pindari Glacier?

My questions are:

What would be a good base for mid-range treks at this time of year and how would I get there from New Delhi?

What temperatures should I expect? (what rating sleeping bag should I be after and what clothing?)

I am keen to do full camping treks but am also wondering if there are tea houses in the area/will they be open?

I will need to have some of my luggage stored while I'm away trekking. Should I find somewhere in New Delhi?

Permits?

Thankyou in advance, Harry

Hi Harry, welcome to Indiamike.

Joshimath is one place from where we started our trek to Kuari Pass. The trekking agency would store your luggage at Joshimath or any such place. But then you have to exit at the same place to take your luggage!

It’s a big area and good base would ideally be the last road head. It could be Sankri for har-ki-dun or Munsayari for Milam. First, you need to select the treks you wish to do. If you are not returning to the same base, the local porters usually arrange for luggage transfer and it will be delivered at the point you will be returning. However, this is not a good option. Permits are required for a couple of places. Would be better if you post with a clear plan and location you wish to go trekking.

Hi Harry,

Bageswar in Kumaun is the base town for Pindari, Kafni, Sundardunga glacier & Miketoli base camp. First two are moderate.

Temperature during October is 2 to 15 degree Celcius but minus 1 to 2 at glacier view point generally at night.

Halowfill sleeping bag range of -20 celcius is good enough. Halowfill jacket/fleece jacket while in rest and warm innerwear like wool cotton in sleeping time, full sleeve T-shirt/Track suit in Trek time.

There are tea/tiffin/meal available throughout the route.

If you are foreigner, all the information regarding permits may got from Foreign Tourist Information & Registration office, New Delhi. Indians required nothing.

Luggage can be stored at Hotels or cloak room of Rly. station.

Wish you happy trekking.
