This will be a great trek. Just get a good guide who can lead you through heavy snow, as there is prediction of heavy snow in this places rather earlier than prevous years.

Normally the Tungnath Chandrashil trek is a very easy one - but with Snow around it is a different thing altogether. I have done this trek in Aug-Sept period 3 times including one in the night. Spending night in Chandrashila is an awesome experience (it was one day before fullmoon night) with great views of Cahukhambha.

We tried to go to Chopta once in winter (actually end of winter late feb 2003) but our jeep could not go beyond Dugalbitta and some people in the group were not willing to walk from there to Chopta so we turned back. I would say in januray be prepared to walk some part of the Ukhimath- Chopta road. Also the temple would be closed and I guess the 2-3 tea stalls in Tungnath will be closed as well so do carry all provisions...All the best.

Does this mean we can look for a good skiing season in Auli this year? Last two years hardly saw any snow..

We are also planning to go to tunganath-chandrasila during end of december....I talked to GMVN office of Guptakashi and Okhimoth but their reply is not very confident....
According to Both the offices, tunganath and chandrasila are doable and also guides are available provided the conditions are ok....i.e. there is not heavy snowfall going on...
But again they are speculating about some kind of permit reqd from Guptakashi Admin...anybody can put some light on this???

In north India winter is setting in early and expected to be harsh. So expect medium to heavy snowfall in January. Equip yourselves with good thermals. Nights would be very very cold in Chopta and you would need heating. So check out well before you set out.

Considering January time as your choice of trek there will be heavy / very heavy snow prevailing conditions. All green meadows will be covered with fresh soft snow and leg deep. Advice is to use the following alternative route

Day 1 & 2 - Trek 16km trek to Dugal Bitta from Deoria Tal, through dense forests ascending from 1,500m to 2,000m
Day 3 includes a 9km trek to Chopta on winter snow slopes
Day 4 involves an attempt on the Chandrasilla peak (3,679m) via Tungnath; trek of 7km

Make sure you carry enough provisions of food and highly down filled jackets and sleeping bags.

In Chopta and Okhimath you will find FRH, TB and pvt. hotels but Deoriatal, Tunganath and Chandrashila there is no scope of dependancy, so have your gear in place and hire a good guide and porters who will lead you to snow. Also as a colleague mentioned above make a day to stay at Chandrashila top, its amazing. Im crazy to see the snow pics, write back when you have conquered with full details.

Thumbs up Chopta in winters

Hi,all
Janaury in chopta could be very great experience, lots of snow (as my last feb07 visit).
please try to book Ukhimath GMVN guest house in advance and u can do day treks; ukhimath devriatal, ukhimath to chopta(or till where ur jeep can go)to chopta and higher as possiable.Ukhimath to mansuna and to Kalimath and atay in guptakashi and so on.
If u are very good trekker, can carry 10-15 kg of personal baggage(tents,MSR,light wieght(high enrgy)food,i hope you can do this without any big problem. There are many summer shelters which you can use as roof and put your tent inside for more warmth. There are a plenty of dead wood (to keep urself warm.
Climbing; There is easy trail leading towards tungnath temple and beyond that a steep climb till the chandrasilla top.Try to take normal trail till tungnath(depends on snow condition)and after that, climb just behind the temple(next to Baba cave)to one steep pitch of 20mtr (if there is packed snow),and leads towards the summitt in one line.
Hope you will be rewarded with The best views of Himalayas.
Around this area you can see Himalayan Thar and other wildlife.
Happy climbing!
