Thanks Rd and Tilak for the information.
Do these people speak in English? I can't speak hindi very well.

One other thing, after hiring guide/porter and camping equipment from Uttarkashi, do I need to carry all in our hired car? If that is the case then we might need a bigger car.

Also, do you have to provide food and camping gear for guide/porter as well?

How long does it take from Uttarkashi to Gangotri?

When you book guide/porter do you have to pay money in advance? How do you pay them in advance?
In my case as I am in UK how do I pay them in advance if they do not take credit cards?

I was trying to book accommodation with GMVL via their web site. They do not take credit cards. The transfer between a bank in UK and India usually cost a lot of money.

Just spoken to NIM and the guy I spoke to says that he will provide everything (food etc all inclusive) and charge Rs2500 for each person for 3 nights from Gangotri - Tapovan - Gangotri.

For two of us Rs5000 sounds a lot. What is the going rate these days?

is it mr.himalayan sherpa whom you spoke.....in 2500 what will he provide? if he is providing you tent, sleeping bags, rucksack, guide, porter, then around 1500-1800 can be bargained. since you would be going upto tapovan only, the trek is not tough.

I spoke to mr.himalayan sherpa. he told me that he will provide the complete package camp, sleeping bag guide, porter, helper food etc. he also said that come to Uttarkashi and see me.
Do I need to pay him in advance to book?
The phone line was so bad that we could not talk very well.

Tilak, are you using the same guy for your trip?

A friend of mine in India suggesting that there is no need to book hotel/lodges early. What do you think?

Our latest revised plan is as follows:

6th Oct – arrive at Delhi and 4.5hrs car journey to Haridwar. Overnight stop (hotel).

7th Oct – drive up to Uttarkashi. Overnight stop. Meet guide/porter and collect permission for trek.

8th Oct – drive to Gangotri. Overnight stop. (hotel/lodge)

9th Oct – trek to Bhojbasa. Overnight stop (Camp/lodge)

10th Oct – trek to Gaumukh and Tapovan. Overnight stop (Camping)

11th Oct – treck to Bhojbasa. Overnight stop (Camp/lodge)

12th Oct – treck to Gangotri Overnight stop (hotel/lodge)

13th Oct – drive to Rishikesh Overnight stop. (hotel) (is this doable?)

14th Oct – drive to Delhi.

What do you think of this plan? I hope it is not too rushed.

If we allow another two/three days can we do Kedarnath and Badrinath?
I thought they are too far away and may not be doable.

Yes ! There is no need to pre book hotels.

Nobody goes to Gangotri for stay, pilgrims constantly keep moving.....

So Hotels are no problem.....

Trek To Gomukh /tapovan

I wish to travel on 1st week of Jun 2009 with my Dad aged about 70yrs and Mom about 60yrs (Sugar level pp 126(no medicine only yoga, BP 90/140(with medicine))for Gomukh and if all well will try out for Tapovan also. I have enjoyed Amarnath through Baltal route 4yrs back alone. Last yr my parents went through Chandanbari by trek with some group. They have not faced any kind of problem but enjoyed a lot.So this they plan to trek this route.I have already sent my request for permission to Gomukh/Tapovan and following information I urgently required for my parents from your experience desk (including DOs/DON'Ts):
(a)Medicines
(b)Cloths
(c)Foods (including dry)
(d)Any thing more.

Dear salilchanda,

Welcome to the site!

What about guides and porters ?

For Tapovan trek you'l need camping equipments also. At Bhojbasa you have GMVN after that there is nothing.
