In these hills average speed comes to 35-40 KMs per hour at the max.

And if you are prone to travel sickness, carry some tablets, on way to Gangotri, Sukhitop is crucial, here roads have sharp bends and you gain a lot of height in a short span.

We are aware of gaining a lot of heights within short space of time which may cause altitude sickness.
We are planning to make overnight stops at Rishikesh and then Uttarkashi and then Gangotri.
Do you think this will be enough? Or do we need to make longer stops?

I think these will be enough ! In any case you'll have to take a break at Uttarkashi for your permit !

Hi delhiwala,
Do you know the date when the Gangotri temple closes for the winter and no one is allowed to trek beyond that?
Various threads suggest that the temple closes in November. However I was talking to a friend of mine in India over the weekend and he suggested that the temple closes at the beginning of October.
We have chosen 2nd week of October for good weather forecast.
We are trying to avoid going there during monsoon season.

How can we be certain that the doors will remain open when we get there?
We need to book international flights etc and need to make sure it is still open when we visit.

I am not sure if this can be relied upon. Does anyone have views?

Portals of Gangotri are closed on Deepawali Festival which is falling on 17th October this year.

But even after this you can do the trek, if you have inner line permit ! I think you should visit in the 1st week of October. Weather will be good and there will be no rush on the route.

Inner line permit is a special permit for visiting certain specified areas. This is issued by the District Magistrate (DM) or Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of the area concerned. If you want to visit Gangotri/Gomukh/tapovan after the portals are closed, then you need this permit. In this case SDM Uttarkashi office will issue it.

We are allowing three days (two overnight stops, Rishikesh and Uttarkashi) to reach Gangotri. This will allow acclimatisation.

On the way back from Gangotri to Delhi how many overnight stops do we need?
I know that the roads are mountainous. But is it faceable to do Gangotri to Rishikesh in one day? And the second day from Rishikesh to Delhi.

Thanks guys,
we are booking our flights now and the flight arrival at Delhi is about 9:30am. We are thinking about taking the car+driver from the airport and travel another 4.5 hours and spend the night at Haridwar hotel instead of Delhi hotel. We need to leave our luggage at Haridwar hotel prior to heading towards Gangotri.
What do you think of this idea? On the way back we spend another night at the same hotel and pick up our luggage before heading off to Delhi.

I know I have been asking too many questions; but you guys have been very helpful.
