Thank you for all the replies so far...

What is the distance like from Bhijbasa – Gaumukh and from Gaumukh – Tapovan and how long does it take to do each of these teak?

We are thinking on a slightly different plan:
Is it possible to make this trek Bhijbasa – Gaumukh – Tapovan – Bhijbasa in one day?

Due to steep climb needed for Tapovan my wife doesn’t want to go up to Tapovan.

Is it practical and safe to leave her at Gaumukh while I trek up to Tapovan and back to Gaumukh later in the day? I was hoping to camp one night at Tapovan but I think that might not be possible.

I think it is safe to leave her at Bhojbhasa, in fact it is safe to leave her for the night also as there are many lone lady trekkers who come and stay at bhojbhasa, well leaving her alone for the night may or may not be safe for you

I have been reading about the trek between Gaumukh and Tapovan.
Although it is a short distance but I understand it is steeper and one has to walk over glacier. I have seen photos of the steeper section but I am not sure about the glacier part. I am sure that a lot of people have done this section; could you describe the difficulty please? I am fairly fit but I need to prepare in my own mind what to expect.

I'm sorry this a quick reply (as I did not go into the previous posts). Gaumukh to Tapovan can be handled without MAJOR hiccups.
Are you taking a guide?

I dont see it as a major issue. the glacial moraine can be a bit slippery and jumping on boulders can be tiring but if you go to Gaumukh then Tapovan has to be attempted.

Thanks to you both.
I am going to go up to Tapovan; I need to persuade my wife to join me.
We are thinking to hire at least one (may be two) guides/porters to assist us carrying our load. We also need to hire camping gear; where is the best place?

Hopefully one of the porters will help my wife to go over the glacier and the steep sections.

What sort of car should we hire from Delhi?
Should we hire an “Ambassador” car or go for “Jeep” or similar?

Upto Gomukh no need for guide, but for Tapovan, hiring a guide is good idea. Once you reach there contact GMVN TRH or ask your hotel, they'll suggest you Guide and porters.

You may hire camping gear from Rishikesh.

Car will take you up to Gangotri only, so any one will do ! No need for 4WD here.

Regarding Sleeping Bags, I'll say buy your own. They come cheap. Bhojbasa has GMVN place or you may stay at ashram. But at Tapovan you'll need them.

Hi tilak
Thanks for the info.
It’s only about 450km from Delhi. Do you know what the quality of the roads like? Do I need to take travel sickness tablets?
We are also planning to make this trip first or second week of Oct this year.
You never know we might even meet while trekking…
