Porter cost should be within 250/day till Gaumukh. We paid 350/day for Tapoban. You'll also be taking care of their lodging & fodding cost.

We would expect a porter to carry our rucksack etc.
They sure will carry your rucksack. They also doubled as cook (moderate level & nothing better than basic maggie, soup, tea, coffee, khichri, rice & dal stuff) in our case. You can ask for Rajinder & Kishore at Gangotri. Look for them at Chander of Mandakini Guest House, Gangotri (I had his cell no. but unfortunately he seems to have changed it).

I am not sure if this is off/peak season dependent or dependent on bartering skills.
Bargain skills pay off well in India, Turkey, Thailand & perhaps at most of the other countries of the world.

sandeep,
Trek to Gaumukh and back takes two days.
Does that mean the porter will cost Rs500 (approx) plus his food and lodging cost?
We have already booked GMVN accomodation at Bhojbasa for two of us. I hope porter will find his own accomodation.

Stay at the Lal baba ashram is free of cost. They expect a token donation though for food & stay.

this is a new thing that i m hearing about the permit at uttarkashi.
the last time i went to gaumukh was in 2004 and at that time there was just some personal information input in the registers at the beginning of the trek.
can someone put more light on the permit thing. is it a time consuming process at utarkashi. coz i was planning to leave early morning from rishikesh and reach gangotri by sunset.

also, i read that the trek closes on 17th october this year. does this mean that no new trekkers will be allowed from 17th october? what about those who are already at gaumukh or tapovan on that date. i mean those who leave before 17th, are they suppose to come back down on 17th. bcoz i m planning to do the trek on 15,16,17 and come down on 18th. is this posibble?

I really doubt if anyone is going to frogmarch you down the hill, so no need to be concerned.

In fact the trek will close much before the temple closes, which is always on the day of Diwali. So you had better call up the DFO office and find out. You do need a permit now and for this you need to apply in advance at the DFO office as only 150 people a day are allowed.

@sahitya
There is detailed thread on the permit details of Gangotri National Park. It's a sticky one, hence you can find it on the 1st page of the trekking part of the forum.

hi, i spoke to a person on the DFO's office number. he told me that the trek closes at 15th october and even those who have gone to gaumukh must return before 15th or on 15th!!!!! he said that the gate to the route closes
now i m in a soup.
i m going to reach delhi on 11th and wanted to see tapovan too. will have to rush up i guess.
are there chances that the authorities might stop goers on 15th but those coming down will be allowed after 15th too ?

I don't think so. The DFO can only provide with the exact info on this. Rest of us will will be doing a guess work.

Hi sahitya,

Are you planning to do a one long drive to Gangotri from Rishikesh?
We are doing Gaumukh trek on 10th Oct and staying one night at Uttarkashi.
If you stay at Monal Torist home (Uttarkashi) one night then they can get the permit for you for free. The owner of the Monal home is a good man and his name is Deependar. We will collect our permit from him when we get there.

Our plan is to arrive at Delhi and then either hire a car plus driver for the duration of this trip or to take a train journey to Haridwar and then hire a car and driver.
Can any one help me with this trip please? Do we really need a tour operator?

Although we were born and brought up in India but we have been out of the country for too long and need help planning this trip.

Can any one recommend and good reliable tour operator that might be able to help us on this matter. We are thinking to spend about two weeks in this area then head towards Kolkata to visit friends and family.

I am sure that others have done this trip; can some one give the literary please.
Thanks in advance
