ami.subu,
With all due respect; why don’t you start a new thread with your own specific travel plan instead of hijacking this specific thread?

What do you mean by the best route ?

Haridwar-Rishikesh-Uttarkashi-Gangotri-Gomukh-Tapovan-Nandanvan is the route.

Is there are any foreign currency exchange (Bureau de change) offices around Char Dham route? Should we exchange foreign currency for Indian rupees at Delhi? Or it can be done at Haridwar or Uttarkashi.
If there isn’t any ‘Bureau de-change’ around the char dham route then we will have to carry a lot of cash with us all the time. We usually carry credit cards and not too much cash when we are on holiday. What do other travellers do around the char dham route? Is it safe to carry a lot of cash? What do you think?

No there are no Foreign Currency Exchanges on the Route, but most people use credit/debit cards and they work. ATM's are available on the route and you can withdraw money from your credit card as and when needed. Before you start using it in India, please inform your credit card company that you would be using the card in India for a while, otherwise they may block it.

It's as safe as houses in an earthquake zone!! Those of us living here use cash, no checks and cards - so a roll of notes is what you shall have to carry.

Guys,

What sort of temperature and climate should we expect in and around Gaumukh, Kedarnath and Badrinath between 9th and 16th Oct? Should we expect heavy snow fall in the higher altitudes?
We need to make a list of things (food and clothing) we will be carrying during our trip. A friend of mine in India suggested that it might be very cold and we should carry heavy jacket. Should we carry rain coat as well?

I was looking at some of the Gaumukh photos taken during May; snow and ice every where. Can’t believe snow during the month of May!!

Who can foretell the weather these years - Expect it to be cold and snow and rain, after all it's the Himalayas - then anything less inclement is your good fortune. Obeisance to the Devta on your way up may ensure a pleasant spell?

Hi Sks551,
I visited Kedarnath,Badrinath,Yamunotri during the mid week of October some years back..

Only Kedarnath was little cold.
In the morning we found mild snok flakes in the temple arena.
But the weather throught the journey was superb.

Paleface,
I also look at this trip philosophically; if Devta wants us to enjoy this trip then it will be good. As a young boy I used to dream about visiting these places; now is the chance to do it.

Devajoti, we are quite used to with the cold weather in London. It is just a matter of carrying all those clothing. I think we will hire porter/s to carry our backpack.

I wonder if some one can explain this Google map route from Uttarkashi to Kedarnath via NH-108 route.
As we will be visiting the area during Oct, I was looking at Google map for the location and the road network.
Why don’t people use this route NH-108 from Uttarkashi to Kedarnath via Purali? According to Google map the driving distance is only about 81km and takes 1hr 10 min (must be joking). Please take a look at the Google map for the area and see what I mean.

The question is; is this route passable?
All Chardham traffic go via Rudraprayag to Gaurikund which takes more than a day.

Google map on NH 108

SKS551,

Without doubt there is a mistake in the google map. If one were to follow the map, it would be just a few hours drive from Kedarnath to Gangotri and vice versa. In reality the road does not exist.

Obviously, Google will have to figure out their source of data.

Cheers

the route that the map shows is actually the kalinidi Khal route to Kedarnath which is a trekking only high altitude route. Obviously someone made a BIG mistake!
