Is it like the gate opens once every hour for 10-15 minutes and then closes the gate until the next opening time?
Right !

Quote:
Is it to prevent too many vehicles travelling at the same time in this narrow section of the road?
Again right !

What is the reason for closing the gate at 4pm? Any idea?
It gets dark early in the hills.

Would be grateful if someone could enlighten me on the availability of porters from Gangotri for Vasukitaal trek.

My friends & I completed the Kedartaal trek in oct. 2006. & again in 2007 to Bhujbasa(had to return 'cause of heavy snowfall). There were no permit requirements at that time and we managed a guide & porters from Gangotri itself. Dunno the present scenario.
For Sep. 2009, we are planning to hire an experienced guide from uttarkashi & porters from Gangotri. Any advice for the same?

I want to know if porters will be available for hire in Gangotri.
Presently we're planning to hire our guide from Uttarkashi and porters from Gangotri. Trek date is end of September.

Thanks for the affirmation.
In 2007, we had a bad experience with a guide hired from Gangotri. So this time its going to be porters from Gangotri & guide from Uttarkashi!

Contact of Guide I'm contemplating for Vasuki taal trek:
I have his number... Mr. Negi. He owns a trekking agency.

Can you give me the name of the trekking agency I will find out if he is trust worthy or not. There are many people who have opened up trekking agencies but all are not very reliable or good.

Best would be to call up the DFO office before you start off on your trip and confirm the receipt of the fax. Have known the DFO people to lose papers before.
