Treks in October

Hi All

Complete novice, just 1 soft trek and a day trek to our credit. So please help us scale a few more lowly but lovely peaks. We are planning it mid October . We wish it to be cold and snowed in and lush all the all the way till we get there. Its just my wife and me at this point.

Following are a few shortlisted routes, but am not sure which is the best one to take at this time of the year.

Sikkim
Yuksom - Dzongri - Goech La
Pelling - Tashiding

Uttaranchal
Har - Ki - Dun Valley
VOF _ Hemkund
Pindari Glacier Trek

Or anything you guys can suggest

Hi,

All treks are easily do-able in october. it is one of the best times for trekking.

Check them out and i suggest you should go for the trek that seems the most beautiful to you.

One more thing - if you want it to be all snowed and cold, then october is nto the best time for that. Go in January and hope that it snows while you are there. Others won't advice you on the same but the best and only time for snow is winters. if you want to snow in October, then you would have to go higher than 5000 metres, which is not recommended for first timers.

If you look at the har ki dun, dhakuri and trip to eastern kumaon and nepal links on my blog, all these trips were done in winters. we did it in winters to enjoy the snow and were lucky enough to get it on all three occasions. hoping the lucky streak continues this year also...

By the way, try khalia top. it is a really easy trek to undertake in october. can be done in 2 days at a leisurely place and the views are really cool. pics on the link i just posted above.

Much anguish after seeing your blog , can't wait till october, those are really looking pics and place, i am completely taken in with Bedni Bugyal & Chopta. Love the beauty of both these places, especially all the snow.

Har Ki Dun Trip looks amazing too , just wondering if you think we could probably at least touch the snow line.

The thing is october is the time we get our leave so thats when i can really "chill" out

Much sympathy,also from Bombay hence the only possible time to go is between Dassehra and Diwali.

Last year I went to Auli/Badrinath/Mana/Vasudhara Falls and the year before trekked along the Singalila Ridge.This year planning to go to either Gangotri - Tapovan or Har Ki Dun ( and there are some fantastic threads here on both treks)

hey, you guys know what... during the diwali time, usually there is one or two days of rainfall in the hills. it sometimes translates into snowfall in the upper reaches. so you might just get lucky and get a blizzard or two. in october, i think you will have to cross bedni and just go a little bit higher. those areas should be snowbound. try and see if you can contact the guides whose number i have given in my contact details page - if the number still exists. he can give you a better account of october weather in bedni area. or just see if you can contact another im member arjunm and he might be able to give you some more contact numbers of some ppl in those area.

but most likely that if you go higher and beyond bedni, you should get snow in october....

Hi Onetrek;

Am planning to leave for Delhi on the 17th October and I am looking at an 8 day (Delhi to Delhi)trip, with (hopefully) 4-5 days of walking. I have never been up the Bhgirathi/the Western Garhwal area so I am basically interested in Gangotri/HKD,which offer that kind of mix of travel time and walking.

I usually go alone (and have met some wonderful people that way) or with one friend from Delhi - although I would not mind teaming up with you.

You can choose Goecha La. Moderately easy trek. The best times to go to Sikkim is May and October. So you could think about it. Jungle, Lakes and lots of high rise Peaks are on the route.

Hey SSG, the plan was to go to Roopkund with the wife but am getting a lot of negative feedback for the trail at this time of the year, were planning to get to Dehradun by the 18th do around 8 days of hiking and spend another 4-5 days recovering .

How does the HKD trail fair around that time of the year any ideas.

HKD or Gangotri/Tapovan should be fairly good around 20 October.

However I have a suggestion: why dont you follow the Alaknanda upto Rudraprayag; then go to Ukhimath -Deoria Tal- Chopta- Tungnath- Anusuya Devi. IF you are feeling adventurous you can try the Nela Pass and Rudranath. Its a beautiful area and definitely worth visitng.

On the way back do a little bit of rafting with Aquaterra at Shivpuri.

btw Dehra Dun is not a great place to base yourself for treks in Uttarakhand.

1. Harkidoon is an easy trek. The place is beautiful. You'll get lots of info and help. Accommodation won't be a problem. Try to fit Ruinsara Tal into your programme. You should not have a problem before October end.

2. Roopkund is avoidable in October, esp. if you are not very experienced. It may snow in October.The snow and the treacherous rocks beyond Baguabasa are a deadly combination.
If you really want to go to that area, see Wan, Bekhal Tal, Kukina Khal, Bedni Bugyal, Pathar Nachauni, Ali Bugyal, etc. and come back. Don't go beyond Pathar Nachauni. The whole area is beautiful.

3. Some other soft options in Uttarakhand (for October)are:

Garhwal:

a. Triyuginarayan-Maggu Chatti-Kinkhola Khal (read my thread, the Trans-garhwal Hike)
b. Chopta-Tunganath-Chandrasila Peak, Deoria Tal-Barniyakund/Chopta
c. Sagar-Panar-Rudranath
d. Raithal-Dayara Bugyal and around
e. Auli-Gorson and around
f. Thatyur-Nagtibba-Surkanda Devi
g. Dodital and around

Kumaon:

a. Pindari Glacier, or just Dhakuri
b. Birthi-Munsiyari on a route parallel to the road, the ponds and ridges near Munsiyari and on the Munsiyari-Martoli-Milam trail
c. Lohaghat-Devidhura-Dhanachuli Bend-Bhatalia-Nathuakhan-Sitla-Almora-Binsar-Bageshwar-Loharkhet-Dhakuri on foot, which is very long, but always a great experience
d. Askot-Madkot-Munsiyari
e. around Gangolighat
f. Corbett (Garjia)- Binsar Mahadev - Dunagiri 365 steps

October will give you great views from everywhere, even from places which are not too close to the Greater Himalayan ridges - Verinag, Chaukori, Gwaldam, Sitla-Mukteshwar, Binsar, Kausani, Pauri-Khirsu, Chamba-Surkanda Devi, Nagtibba, Chakrata.......
