Trekking Singalila Ridge in Feb/ March 2008

Hi:

I and a friend want to do a trek along the Singalila Ridge in late February or early March 2008. It's a bit early in the season but appears to be possible. Neither of us have been to India or trekked, so we could use some advice.

1. We are looking for a local guide and porters. We've tried telephoning a couple and e-mail with limited results. Any suggestions on who to contact?

2. Is it possible to set up the trek ahead of time or should we wait until we arrive. (Our preference is to have something arranged ahead of time.)

3. Should we take down or synthetic sleeping bags? We both presently have bags rated to 15 degrees F, but are thinking we need something warmer.

4. We'll be traveling from Chenai where we are visiting my friends relatives, possibly flying in to Kolkata. Should we try to fly to Badgogra instead? We understand there is some train service and also hiring a jeep to get to Darjeeling.

5. Lonely Planet suggests some type of waterproof boat bag to hold our gear. Any thoughts?

We are 50 plus but are in good shape with some mountaining and skiing experience. We are used to being out in snow and wind.
