Trekking in Uttaranchal/Himachal this May

Hi. which treks would you recommend in Uttaranchal or Himachal. I would like to go on one that would last around a week or so, and where i wont need to carry a tent, food or even a sleeping bag. Would the Pindari glacier trek be good. any other with good close views of the himalayas, preferably with a walk on a glacier as well. hope i wont need to carry any boots for the snow either.

Secondly, is there a route from Harsil to Chitkul/Sangla. Would Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur be accessible now.

Thanks for the info.

Ciao

hey,
u can better go to valley of flowers and hemkund. as u r planning just now and in India it takes atleast 1 and half months tto get train tickets....I presume that u will go in july......the time of full bloom of the himalayan flowers.

it will be raining but that is a part of trek in the region....

go to ghangharia from gobindghat (on way to badri) camp in gobindghat and give a visit to both hemkund and valley of flowers from there.....
hemkund is pretty high..so u will have a feel of high altitude also.

i have attached a map along with....

also, u can go for panch kedar trek....it mixes five small 16-25km treks with car/bus journey...ref this site.

Njoy...happy trekking.

Hey hey BABU !

GHANGRIA is above GOVINDGHAT and this is common place from where you can visit Valeo of flowers and come back in evening and next day you can go to HEM KUND and come back in afternoon.

I personaly like PINDARI/KAFNI and SUNDERDUNGA BASE CAMP otherwise ROOP KUND and OUTER NANDA DEVI SANCTUARY IS ALSO GOOD FOR TREKKING.

as he does not want to carry sleeping bag, tent and food....sundardunga, roopkund are out of question. as he was asking for some alternate of pindari in june-july (I think he will be going in that time) I told him to do the valley of flowers trek.

some other options may be
1. har ki doon
2. Chandratal in Himachal
3. Panch kedar(i have mentioned)

Hi

Hi,
The Deo Tibba base trek (Chandratal) is impossible without tent, sleeping bags and food .... as is from Chandratal to Surajtal(baralacha pass) .... if one just wants to trod on then the best option in Himachal is the rest house to rest house treak from Sarahan to Roghi/wangtu ....

Cheers,
Dhananjay

Why does it take so long to get tickets??!!!

We are arriving in a couple of weeks and have not made reservations anywhere!

Going to Dehradun/Rishikesh around 5th of July, but can't make plans as it all depends on how long we trek in Darjeeling. (Going there from Kolkata first)

Is there a general shortage over the summer months? Figured most people would be heading to HP not up to Utt. Or will we have difficulties in finding tickets?

no, being a foreigner u will be having tickets sooner.....under some quota.
but for Indians...they need to book early so as to get reservation in trains.
there is sure a rush in these summer months.... but better plan before hitting the tracks.

as u r still inclined to to a monsoon trek to darjeeling-sandakphu region I welcome u to calcutta (i am from the city) and u can meet me also here as u reach.
(giving my no in PM).

Its better for u to travel by air most of the time as it would save time.....but try to do some train journey as it would give u some idea about India and its people....dont restrain yourself in the AC coach....drop down at stations when train stops....get a cup of tea....as u r adventurous and young(at mind at least..trekkers are) u will enjoy this.

Welcome to my country

Well, since our stay is extensicve, 3 months, our budget is reserved to say the least. (We are both students) We will definately be using trains or even a bus if it comes to that.
So, unfortunately no flying, even though it would have been nice.

We are happy to hear about the tickets . It seems a bit unfair though! Why should foreigners get tickets easier? I guess this is something which should be left to the wonderful people who live there permanently, and we will very humbly bow our heads and say, bahut bahut shukriyć

Perhaps, like always in India, everything will work itself out if you are patient and flexible.

2 weeks left !!!!!

Tents and sleeping bags are needed for the trek.. ypu can hire it from GMVN at Muni ki Reti in Rishikesh (In case you plan to start from Mundoli). There is direct bus from Rishikesh to Mundoli..

Plan it for end of August or september.. else rains may play a spoilsport.

IMF or NIM

You can hire equipments from IMF in Beneto Zuarez Marh in Delhi.

Other place is Nehru Institute of mountaineering in Uttarkashi. But that wont be feasible for you since you are travelling on the other route.. So, not a gr8 idea to hire from NIM unless you are unable to hire it from any place and have atleast a day extra for someone to go from Rishikesh to Uttarkashi and hire them.

I hired long back from a private operator in Delhi but dont remmeber the name and address now.. Other memebers in the group may know about it.

Elsewhere on this trekking forum I've added descriptions of the Milam and Pindari treks which are relatively easy to do without extensive preparations, camping or cooking gear. Pretty straightforward to get too as well, and certainly easy on the wallet.
