Trekking in Uttarakhand in Mid-late November

Hey all,

We're going to be in Uttarakhand in Mid-Nov, looking for some recommended treks.

We've done trekking in New Zealand and the annapurna circuit in Nepal (also in November) - but in no way do we consider ourselves hardcore trekkers.

We've got a couple questions:

1. Any recommendations for a 3-4 day (2-3 night) trek, with good scenery and nice villages, which will be doable and relatively comfortable in mid-late November? Nothing too hardcore?

2. Can anyone advise about what sort of heating, if any, is available in the GMVN huts in the different treks? can we hope to have any heating at all, and what kind? only in the "main room" or also in the "bedroom"?

3. the LP mentions that the Kedarnath temple trek starts at Gaurikund (which, according to Google earth is at around ~2000M), and you spend the night in 3500m. The ascent lasts one day.

Now to me this sounds like a really sharp increase of elevation without any acclimatization. In Nepal, people advised to never ascend more than a few hundred meters a day above 3000m, and not to sleep at the highest altitude you've reached that day...
any thoughts?

Cheers,

-A.

Pls do check through some of the other threads......The route to Kedarnath is likely to be closed.....

Do recheck explicitly before planning for the higher altitudes in uttaranchal

I would recommend either pindari or hari ki dun though you will have to check with KMVN (pindari) or GMVN (hari ki dun) to see if the guesthouses will still be open. I did pindari in mid November last year and it was fine. Even if they were closed you could feasibly still do it going from the village (I forget the name) to the baba's place near 0-point (he typically stays through December) in a long day. Nothing will be open at kedernath the temple closes just before diwali (mid oct this year) and since its all for pilgrims the guesthouse close up shop for the season as well. You can check out my page on treks in Uttarkhand for some other ideas.

By the way no heat except the kitchen much more basic than Annapura. No Bob Marley Hotels with pool tables, homemade pasta, hot showers.

on the altitude you probably wouldn't have any problems going from 2000 to 3500 thats about the altitude of Lhasa and Leh and plenty of people fly into those places From sea level. But it is possible and you should always be aware of the symptoms and never go higher if you have any. A few hundred is bit conservative I'd say around 500 typically once you get above around 3000 m but it really depends on the person and how your body deals with the altitude it has nothing to do with how much in shape you are.
