Choose something easy, something nearer home. Then build up.

In my opinion, you can opt fot "Valley of Flowers" trek, one of the best places to trek in Garhwal during July-August. The reason being:
1) Trek is moderate
2) You can do it solo if the situation demands.
3) No guides required unless you are very much interested in botany (to know about various plant species)
4) Not any special prepartion..a good pair of well broken down shoes (avoid new shoes by all means), few warm clothes (depends and may not be required for the entire trek), poncho (for the rains), sleeping bag (my personal opinion), basic medicines etc.
4). Not an expensive trek. I guess it can be easiliy done under 4,000 per person (if you are in a group), starting Rishikesh/Haridwar.
5). As far as "don'ts" are concerned...don't rush and don't under-estimate the power of nature

start with the markha valley, if you dont like that you wont like anything else in Ladakh and its well signed, homestayable and safe. Any fit person with a right attitude can do it.
