I want to buy a pair of hiking sticks/trekking poles. Not too much sophisticated and within Rs.1000-1200. Can anyone suggest any model or place within kolkata from where I can buy those sticks?? Any site address will be more helpful.

In Mumbai you can get it at Avi industries - not sure if they will ship it to you, but you can ask.

there website is http://aviindustriesindia.googlepages .com/

I bought some trekking poles last month from Avi Industries, Bombay, http://aviindustriesindia.googlepages .com/ The brand was called `Vaude,' and they are advertised as being "anti-shock," meaning that they have a spring arrangement to absorb the impact on difficult terrain. I found them excellent, and a useful buy at Rs. 2250 per pair. Avi also has another brand called `Lucky,' which they said was not anti-shock, and priced at Rs. 1800 per pair; I don't have any experience with those poles. Avi does ship across the country. They charged me Rs. 200 for shipping four trekking poles from Bombay to Allahabad.

The vendor said that they can provide singles instead of a pair in either brand, the cost being half that of a pair. The poles are telescopic, with a maximal length of 1.4m, and can be collapsed to about half that extent.

HTH,
Raghu.

Thanks for the info. Are the poles divided into 3 parts?? I think shock absorbers are needed to cross the glaciers.

I also have a Vaude anti-shock and have been using it for 2 years now - they have seen around 200 kms of trekking and working fine.

Each pole has three sections. Regarding the anti-shock feature, I found that the shock absorption by the poles was quite enough for my knees and arms even when descending along fairly steep and rocky slopes. YMMV.

I agree with Raghu and Spice. Avi Ind. has the Vaude make which are comfortable and very reliable to use during glacier cross or trekking in regions prone to landslides. In such cases you may have to climb small / big boulders and a good anti-shock walking stick will help you overcome the shocks of knees and compress this ratio to more than half. Also during winter treks the knees and legs joints ache a lot which may not permit you to cover long walks which is when this anti-shock stick can be used. I myself have tested the stick and it has given me a good apetite and feel of walking with it. I plan to buy this sometime shortly. I would recommend just go for it, if you are going for north india treks in the long term

Avi can ship the items anywhere in India at actual courier charges.
