Trekking from Darjeeling

My other half and I are travelling to Darjeeling at the beginning of October and are spending about 10 days around Darjeeling. As the visit is so short I am desperate to try to sort out as much stuff as possible before we go. We are keen to go trekking from darjeeling for about 6 days but I have little idea what options are possible. Probably keen to be part of an organised trek but would consider independent.

What companies would people recommend?
Any ideas on contacting them?
What routes are available?
Should I just sort it out once I am there?
What costs should I expect?
What equipment do i need?

I do have some idea about some of the above but will take advice about all from anyone and if it doesn't help me then I hope it helps someone else!

Additionally, does anyone have ex[erienc of staying in Darjeeling, any recommendations for nice hotels?

Thanks in advance

Graeme
