There was a route (rumour ) between Kedarnath & Badrinath but no idea whether still exists or not . Anyways you can consult these websites , I think it will help you.
"During May, 98 we have organized (Indo-British) the first and unique treak between Badrinath and Kedarnath in Central Himalaya. The main purpose of this expedition was to retrace the steps of high priest who was holding services in both the kedarnath and Badrinath temples on the same day, through shortest known route between was 40 miles over high mountain passes and through the extremely deep Kedarnath valley. Inspired to this legend tells, in 1934 Mr.Eric Shipton and Mr.Tillman have tried this route during monsoon. " For details :- http://www.himalayan.com/swagatam.htm "Anindya has explored extensively in Garwal, Kumaun, Sikkim Himalaya . In September, 99 he climbed a virgin col (5260m) in Garwal while looking for a legendary pilgrim route between Kedarnath and Badrinath. Dear friend,
I have recently completed Basic Mountaineering Course from Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. There I recall I met some Guy named Ajay from joshimath. This guy had come for advance mountaineering course for second time (Graded A in both). He had been in all the areas many many times. Imagine a guy who had done Roop Kund trek 24 times. He also had a close nit group of his own for mountaineering in these areas. According to him I recall there exists an ancient route through high mountain passes which connects infact all the three Hindu pligrum sites namely: Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. I have also heard from him the story that there really exists a legend of a high priest who used to The main purpose of this expedition was to retrace the steps of high priest who was holding services in both the kedarnath and Badrinath temples on the same day. However, that was many - many years ago and according to him the landscape may have changed so drastically during all these years that it may not be possible to do it at present. Further, he himself had (I think, but I am not so sure, now) some plans towards this objective. You have not mentioned anything about your himalayan trekking/ mountaineering experience. I would like to know more about this. Further, if at all there exists this route I am quite sure that this feat cannot be undertaken by any trekker/ group without putting themselves in grave danger. leave a message hare. I will come back soon to hear from you. Rahul. |

hi rahul,
ya u r right...i know a lot about this ancient path between kadar and badri. may be that was a rumor...because from years legendary mountaineers are trying to find tha trail...including the big names Shipton & Tillman…. many were lost in that search. actually there are two glaciers.......in between badri and kedar, panpathia and satopanth. people had tried a lot to overcome the satopanth glacier but the tend to lose the path..... The revolutionary finding came in 1998-99 from a bengali mountaineer, Anindya Majumdar (now going to Mt.Everest as representative of hindu religion ). Who earlier was able to ascend the panpathia glacier from some where neer joshimath. Now he was in search of the other end…. i.e. to climb to panpathia glacier from the kedar side. He started from ukhimath….moved to madmaheswar and to madaigalla tal via buda madmaheswar( the old small upper temple). Then he crossed a tough pass…kachni and found another virgin lake…..named it on his famous trekker uncle… Sujal Majumder, as the Sujal sarovar. Making camp at sujal sarovar one can reach the western end of panpathia glacier. But due to some cause he was unable to cross the glacier but taking the route he found, an European team crossed the Panpathia. But that requires preparation like a big expedition and lots of technical stuffs, may be some climbing geers also. May be the old legend is false…but it has helped a lot opening a new trekking route…as tough as kalindikhal trek. May be one good trekking team can go upto madaigalla tal. I have seen some pictures….those are shockingly beautiful with reflection of chowkhamba on the lake. That’s all I know…..hope to see lot more facts coming up. babuchand |

Dear Babu,
Felt really great learning so much information from you regarding the legendary route. And I can say with quite confidence that you too have great love for treking/ mountineering. Would really appreciate if you could forward me the photographs you have mentioned via e mail. I will forward you my mailing address after your confirmation. Would liketo know if you have any plans for the current year. I am planning to join Advance Mountaineering course (NIM) this September. Just before that I am planning to trek to Tapovan - Nandanvan for pre acclamatisation, which will help me perform better during the course. Please leave the message on the thread. with warm regards, Rahul. ![]() |

Basic Mountaineering Course is good and it makes you more experienced and you understand about hazards of climbing in himlaayas. But after you come from AMC- form a small group and start from attemping small peaks-this will give you much wanted experience which will come handy in making and excuting big expeditions like BADRI to KEDAR. Climbing is costly in India-much of gear and it's damage and loss is also comes with the 'package' but there is a hope...make a small group and start climbing. Being Indian-you do not have to pay IMF US$ 2000 and much more for Royalty and 'Processing Charges' and you can excute a small climb with contributions and small sposorships. This is challenging trek we all are talking about-requires a good team with experience and lot of money ! |
