Trekking Costs

Hey, what would be the average cost for an all inclusive week long trek out of manali. I got quoted $50-$60 US a day which seems pretty expensive.

Assuming you'll have 2 porters and 1 guide, their total labour charges would be $20-25 a day. Add to that food and provisions (kerosene, candles, etc), which would be ~ $25-30 for a week, and equipment (4 sleeping bags, 2 tents, 2 ice axes, 3 rucksacks - presumably you'll bring your own, 1 stove, 4 carry mats). Add also about $25 for all sorts of forest department charges etc. All that works out to, on the higher side, $11 a day for a 7-day average.
The real cost would be your journey to and from the roadhead. Typically, this tends to be fairly high. Let's say it's Rs 3,000 (1500 each way). That's another $75. It could be lower, of course, but $50 would be the least, IMO. Over 7 days, that adds another $11.
So your total cost works out to $25+$11+$11 = $ 47 / day. Add to this a 10% commission that your agent is quoting, and you're getting a fair price.
The rub is, of course, that you could seriously bring down your expenses by including more people in your group. With 2 more people, your costs could come down to $20 a day, while the agency would still charge $50 on a per-head basis. That's when you're getting fleeced, not now.

Very nicely put across...!
With All the details broken down to the nitty-gritties...!
But I feel the prices are a bit debatable...

The best course of action is that for a trek out of Manali (I repeat, for a trek out of Manali), it is definitely best to reach Manali first, explore all your options in terms of the package offered and the price, the value for money, etc etc... You'll get several trekking agencies in Manali - Check them out in person.

And if you have the time in Manali, do check out the options even in Old Manali - you might even find some options where an agency / trekkers are looking out for others to join in and that way u get to reduce the cost per person. This option will be doubtful in Manali, but in Old Manali you'll find posters in various cafes / trekking agencies asking for trekking partners for specified treks... Check them out and you are more than likely to get lucky...!

Cheers...!
