trekking companions for spituk-stok and darcha-surchu trecks in August-Sep of 2009

Hello,

I will be traveling in Ladakh from mid-August to beginning of September of 2009. I would like to do a couple of treks and looking for trekking companions. I would like to start out with acclimatizing during Spituk-Stok trek around August 17th and then doing a 10 day Zanskar trek with a Darcha-Surchu loop going through
Darcha -> Kargayak -> Tangzen -> Purne -> Tantak -> -> Murshun -> Yurshun -> Leh/Manali road or Sarchu

Purne. I am looking into possibility of staying in Purne Gompa for a day of meditation. Has anyone done that and would like to share their experiences? Part of this trek after Purne should be a little off the beaten path. However, I read in a trekking guide that it should be easily doable.

How much provision would I need. Can I buy food along the way. Would you recommend hiring a guide/cook to help out with logistics for the trek?

If anyone has any advise or experience in hiring horses/guides your input would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in meeting up and sharing the costs please drop me a line.

Hello Rooben,

My original plan looked like this:

14-Aug Arrive Ladakh Ladakh
15-Aug Monasteries/meditation Leh
16-Aug Monasteries/meditation Leh
17-Aug Stok to Spituk trek camp
18-Aug Stok to Spituk trek camp
19-Aug Stok to Spituk trek camp
20-Aug Stok to Spituk trek Leh
21-Aug Rest/Meditation Leh
22-Aug Rest/Meditation Leh
23-Aug Darcha to Padum trek Darcha
24-Aug Darcha to Padum trek
24-Aug Darcha to Padum trek
25-Aug Darcha to Padum trek
26-Aug Darcha to Padum trek
27-Aug Darcha to Padum trek
28-Aug Darcha to Padum trek
29-Aug Darcha to Padum trek
30-Aug Darcha to Padum trek
1-Sep Darcha to Padum trek
2-Sep Darcha to Padum trek Padum
3-Sep rest/Meditation Leh

I then plan to go on and spend 6 days sight seeing around Delhi...

I am working with a travel agency that my friend used last year to try to hire a couple of horses and a guide for the treks in advance. I learned that there is no way to get back to Leh from Padum without a 500km ride that takes 2 days and goes through Kagril. I would like to avoid that.

I am now looking for other 10 day trek alternatives with good views of Himalayan and Karakoram ranges. Any ideas? How much do local agencies charge for hiking trips like this?

I believe the more people there are in a group the less it costs per person. I would be open to trek in a small group of up to 4 people.

Cheers,
Zahar

Hi Zman, I might be interested in meeting up for a trek. I probably only have about 10 days total for trekking, unfortunately, so am looking for something majestic to fit into that space Any thoughts on if that could work with what you're planning?
