Trekking - Badrinath to Yamunotri

Hi aashish,

1.Do you think its possible to find partners for this trek if I go by myself to the agent? i mean, did you notice any massage board with notes that people ask for partners?

2. Did you hire the equipments in the Utterkashi branch of IMF or at Delhi? and what kind of equipment did you hire?

3. Is it o.k. if i will ask how much money does it cost- the all trek? (it will be O.K.if you will not answer the question)

1. I don't remember seeing any message board wherein people were looking for partners but you may contact any agent and they might help you with it. Moreover, you can check a similar thread on this forum 'First time trekker'. The girl who initiated this thread had a similar question.

2. We hired all the stuff from IMF Delhi.we hired climbing rope, snow hiking boots, kit bags. though other stuff is available as well. you can visit their website for rates and address.

3. as far as the cost goes, all I can tell you is that it was a lilltle less than what it normally is.

Yes we did use the rope. Just check out the pics that I have posted and you'll see that in one of them the rope was being used.

Hi everybody .Being an armchair trekker, i enjoyed this old thread. How a man starts with lots of confusion even about names of places he wants to go and than finally completes a trek which was rated difficult by many time trekkers. Its nice to know that he didnt try out Kedar to Badri which was very difficult (expert opinion) but did finish Badri to Gangotri .Hope i am accepted on this forum ...are there any more armchair trekkers here?

I did this trek almost a year back but I rememeber it like yesterday (though it's hard to imagine all the snow in this extremely hot Delhi summer.........)

It was my first trek and the only trek that I have ever gone to till now. All of us were first timers, so we really didn't know what a difficult trek means. But after doing this trek I'll take the advice given on this website a bit more seriously but at the same time I'll say that it was one of most amazing things that I have ever done in my life.

Aditya, I don't know much about armchair trekkers, other than that fact that they have to be really adventurous. so why don't you tell us more about the treks that you have gone to?

I wish to introduce myself as a new member to this forum but an avid traveller who loves the Uttaranchal. I am looking forward to each of your advice. I am glad to reopen this thread that gave me a lot of info and would like to have some more info.

1. Planning a trip in July 2007 thru GMVNL from gangotri - badrinath - via Kalindikhal Pass - period 10 days from gangotri to badrinath.
2. Is it a good time of the year?
3. What should be the fitness levels like? I gym everyday for 45 min thatz it
4. I am told its a high altitude difficult trek but other than low - medium range trekking experience i have not much experience. My other treks were to Tungnath and 4 Kms of Gomoukh - had to retreat in view of bad weather.
5. I have no mountaineering experience - never done it
6. How good an organiser are GMVNL? As of now im solo and will perhaps be patched with other team members.

All your inputs are awaited.

Considering your previous experience, it seems Kalindi Khal would be a big mouthful for you to chew. Its one of the ten really tough web-published treks in India. GMVN are OK as organizers, but you are alone, and likely to team up with other beginners..... not a good combination at all.

I have taken quite fit first timers up the Pin Parvati Pass which is less difficult and lower than the Kalindi Khal Pass... they managed with a little help on the final stretch. The beginners were three and the experienced guys around were eight, plus the official guide and many [22] porters.

There are lots of discussions on AMS, [just search on "ams"] should you care to read them, for the welfare of your life and limb.

Go for a lighter trek, say going up to 16000 feet [there are very many] and see how you perform. If you do well, go for KK as a second trek.

You must have read the complete thread by now. All the experts advise against doing Badri-arwatal-kalindikhal-vasukital-tapovan-gaumukh trek unless you are one of them. I mean unless you are a 'many time trekker'. Ashish ignored everybody’s advice and did it...he was not even aware of names of places when he first put up his plan on this forum..He was confused between vasuki tal near kedarnath and another vasuki tal which is on one of the bamaks of gaumukh glacier...but he managed to do it.
Moral of the story--formal advise will always be to err on the side of caution but nobody will laud you for being cautious and safe, on the others side, a dead man has not much use of adulation. So it is indeed a tough choice.
Best Option==Join me and savor the pleasures of armchair trekking.

I fully understand wat Avid is telling me and my experience is nothing compared to the folks on this forum and i will respect it completely.

Avid, i will go with wat you say ie. do a less challenging trek and then gun for KK. I know i will do it someday But i do have another question for you as a veteran on this forum. Many a times im stuck for want of a group, is there any way i can get info on treks / patch up with people who are likely to plan a trek soon. If yes, how do i go about this and how safe is this option? I have a reliable org in Rishikish but yes i need to inform them and then wait for them to patch me with the right group. I have been surviving thus. Appreciate your inputs.

Aditya - Thanks for your msg and advice - but unfortunately im not an armchair traveller. The mountains call me and I MUST GO Just can't live without seeing them once every two years. I belong there

From the others - i look forward to any advise that could help and if there are any places that you feel are apt for me, pl do post.

Hi,
Well after going through your message and your desire to do trekking from Gangotri to Badrinath I feel you can do the trek with some more walking at high altitude. Tungnath and Gaumukh are pilgrim trails and where you are thinking of going to is entirely different. As for Aashish we do not know about him much other than that he has done the Badrinath to Gangotri trek.

Coming to your trekking I would suggest that you do trekking to Tapovan and to Kedartal and this will give you some idea of the things to come on longer high altidude treks.

Yes I agree you need to be part of a group to be able to plan and do trekking in Himalaya.
All the best and hope you are able to do many treks in Himalaya.

KK for now is on hold. Im planning a simpler trek sometime in August with a visit to Valley of Flowers. Have not been there for a while and i want to visit wonderland again

Hi,
During VOF trek again you move on a pligram trail and it does not give you feel of a hard core trek. If time permits try and do Kagbhusandi lake or Kauri pass where you have to have camping gear.
