Trekking Agencies in Leh
A small group of teacher friends and I are trekking the Zanskar Traverse this summer and will be on a tight schedule of about 32 days for our trip including all travel. Can you recommend along with e-mail info, some good trekking agencies in Leh?

rimo expeditions. i treked with them last summer and a friend of mine (also a teacher) has been doing so for years. they are a well established local company can help with next to everything, transferes accomodation etc. they are also used by big companies such as KE adventure travel. their web adress is http://www.rimotreks.com/ i cannot stress how welcoming and charming they were. hope this helps some.

I know few of them,
but last year I recomended someone from IM and he/she/group got a good price for horse/trekk across Spiti to Leh via Paranga-la (one of the difficult one and which changes its shape and crevasses every year and its a nightmare for many trekkers). This guy ( good english speaking and carrying 2 extra horses free of cost to carry enough food for the group) found that the day was not good to cross the pass (it was his 49th time on this pass) and he decided to camp at 3PM obiviouly with few more hours left for sunset. The guest/customer objected and complained that he is trying to extend the treak. His point of view was food for his horses, which would not come by in next 12 hours till they cross the pass to the base. The customer thretened to complain and not to pay, ( his stupid logic was 'Who is paying? me or the Horses?' ). This hurt him and He went on, after crosing Paranga-la when he wanted to give some rest and food to his horses, the customer wanted him to go on...and when he tried doing it, one of the horses died. when my friend wanted to halt for 3 hpurs so that he can burry the body in peace, he was denied that time. Finally he was so stessed out that he left the guys and came running back. He is considered as the guy with the best horses, english speaking, best knowledge of terrain and culture and who loves his horses like his own kids. So if you can toletrate this guy(even if you don't want horse trekking), he has he knowledge, drop me a PM and I'll give you his contact details.

Hey Vinay,
I had heard of the bad exp that the person(horsemen) had. Its better not to recommend any such person to foreign tourists (especially never mention any price to them). They should better go to the big sharks (opertaors) who would tolerate all their whims bcoz of the price they extract from them. I remember someone mentioning in one of the posts that they want western standards at the Indian price and that too are unaccomodating to any change in iterinary. May look rude to some of my fellow IMers but these locals in the hills are very nice, gentle and accomodating people. Once you travel/trek with them, you become good friends with them. They would be most accomodating and ready to travel an extra mile to help a new person if he gives your reference. and I wont like to expose my friends to any arrogant tourist. Cheers, JP

Local guide/cook/arriero
Although I'm a foreign tourist, I'm looking the kind of guide that you mentioned. I'm very used to local guides in S. America. Could you please tell me how to get in touch with them?
